Baltimore RBs

A lot of the focus over the past few weeks has been on the RBBC guys.

One team that was a total RBBC mess last year was Baltimore. Last year Ray RIce, Willis McGahee, and LeRon McClain all had 100+ carries.

The RB who did the most damage was actually the FB McClain. He had the most carries, yards, and TDs.

Coming into 09 I have heard that McClain will move back to FB, but I'm personally a bit of a skeptic on this.

What do you guys make of this RB situation? Are any of these RBs draftable? Will any of them bust out?

I feel the season will develop much like last season, with nagging injuries to Rice and Willis, and LeRon making most of the noise. That jumbo package was lethal, and dude can catch. He is their best back.

This is a messy situation, but they do like to run and you could catch lightening in the bottle with one of them. I tend to feel differently than RC, I think McClain took advantage of the situation last year but I do not feel he will have any impact this upcoming season. So for me it comes down to can Willis bounce back and shake off the injuries or will Ray Rice emerge as the RB of the future??? Both can be had cheap, It may not be a bad idea to try to land both late, you may catch on with one of them.

I tend to line up more in agreement with RC. Lewis this late in his career at best will need someone to share the load to prevent his wearing down or injury. Rice showed promise and is a definite factor but McClain is the most reliable of the bunch. I agree with Miller (I gritted my teeth just typing that) that McClain took advantage of the situation last year but isn't that what you want?

Jamal in a slow decline and Rice having yet to prove himself I think the move to FB is to insure he is on the field and will be utilized more consistently even though I would expect Lewis to remain the #1 if healthy.

You mean Willis.

Keep in mind that FB Lorenzo Neal is now on the Raiders and McClain will be forced back to the FB role.

I really think McGahee will be the guy here. That injury really set him back last year and held him down. Excluding last year McGahee managed to go over 1100 yards in 3 of his 1st 4 seasons.

McGahee, Rice, McClain.

That's how I would rate the production I see coming up this season. There's no way around it though, Baltimore is nothing more than a headache for fantasy owners.

No more Neal, means McClain will be FBing a lot more, dropping his production, IMO.

Rice is going to be splitting carries with Willis the most, so I think he's 2nd on the production list.

Then there's McGahee, which the league already knows can touch the ball 15-20 times a game.

Ryan and I have discussed their RBBC situation on the podcast and radio show before. We've decided, because it worked last season, that we'd just play rock/paper/scissors to determine the RB of the week. You'll thank us later.

To me, Baltimore learned why Buffalo was willing to deal away McGahee. He is constantly dinged up...and misses time. The value for him is minimal...so if you must have him..take him late.

McClain was a gem...but I am hearing more and more that he will be more full time FB and less half back. So I think Rice and the rookie they drafted may see more carries.

I'm not a big Ray Rice fan. Guy had 107 carries last year and never managed a single TD.

The coaching staff also doesn't seem to have much faith in him. Of the 12 games he played last year, he only received 10+ carries in 3 games. He also only received 20+ carries in 2 games, and in only 1 of those games did he manage 100+ yards.

The only upside I see in him is his receiving ability. 33 receptions for a guy in his shoes ain't bad at all.

Overall, with the RBBC situation, and his inability to explode for TDs, I don't think this guy looks too promising. I won't use the term useless, but he's not far off.

I'm not a big Ray Rice guy either. The Ravens were probabbly the worst RBBC last year for Fantasy porposes. Early in the season we had Willis get dinged up and had times where he had practiced, dressed out for the game and made inactive 5 minutes before the start of the game. Those with Willis in were screwed and those with Rice on the bench were screwed. Everything I have read about Rice has suggested that he is a pass catchy 3rd down kind of back. While you say the coaches don't have much faith in Rice they don't seem to have much faith in McClain either. They are making McClain a FB and blocker from the sounds of it. Where as I would have given McClain the keys to the car and make the other two take them away from him. Given that and my belief that Willis can't stay healthy I think Rice may end up with a chunk of carries in the mid-season. I would obviosly like to here a lot more camp intel before making judgements like this. But I would not really count on any of them for real consistent fantasy production. McClain was the only one that was really useful in a pick him up off the WW and use him late in the season mode. I will watch this group carefully but I don't really expect much as a whole.

  • -- Ray Rice Bulks Up; Le'Ron McClain Overweight --
    Sun May 31, 2009 --from FFMastermind.com
  • The Baltimore Sun reports the Ravens' offseason bulk award goes to second-year RB Ray Rice. The added bulk is definitely noticeable across his chest and lower body. Rice seems to be having a lot of fun at practice and looks more comfortable as a receiver out of the backfield. On the other side is FB Le'Ron McClain, who looks about 20 pounds over his playing weight. This might be a problem if he doesn't get in better condition when training camp starts.
