Arian Foster....is he your #1???

It's going to be interesting to watch the tops of drafts this year, no clear separation at the top of the drafts.

There were three in competition last season and I chose Chris Johnson, though I had Rice pegged as my #1 until the last week before my draft. I had the first pick. This year I don't include Rice up top, and have Foster and ADP 1 and 2 with CJ topping the second tier, draft wise. My top 5 picks safety wise are Foster, ADP, Mendenhall, AJ, and Rodgers. I'm not calling Rodgers a first rounder in the drafts but I do want one of these 5 on my squad. If I can pull off two of them, I'd be tickled. Roddy can be included with this group but if I were to have he or AJ, I would want that to be in a Ppr format.

(Triumphant first post since returning from Iraq and figuring out where the hell the site went..lol)

In the interest of full disclosure, I own Foster in Outlaw County which is a VERY deep (16-team) Dynasty PPR league, and I got him off waivers in week 15 of 2009, so he cost me nothing and I freakin' love it!
I don't think there's alot of debate that in standard scoring redraft leagues, the consensus top-3 are Foster/AP/CJ, in some order. As far as Foster being the safest of the 3, why not? He's the only one with stability at QB, he's the only one who won't be facing 8 in the box (so to speak..) every single week, and he's the best of the 3 at receiving out of the backfield. The only thing missing from his repertoire right now is a track record, and I'm not about to downgrade him for that since he's only 25 years old with fresh legs and nobody that'll eat into his touches. (Tate is the injury handcuff, and that's all)
The beauty of Foster is that he maintains his lofty status in PPR leagues also with 65+ catches last year and nobody emerging in Houston to change that. A healthy Owen Daniels might knock that total down into the mid-50's, but that's still awesome considering Daniels never was a big TD guy, when playing at 100%.
The only guy I would even consider at all over Foster in a 2011 PPR league is Ray Rice, simply because he's a reception machine, and a feature back this year with -presumably- no McGahee which will help his previously lackluster TD totals.. The #3 guy in that format would be LeSean McCoy, with Charles at 4, and AP/CJ at 5 and 6 depending on who you like more. I love Charles' breakout potential but I'd like to see what he does with a legit workload as far as durability before I move him past the other dudes. And chunky Charlie is gone to FL, as well..

In the County scoring format, Foster was over 100 points ahead of the #2 RB, which was McCoy, and the #5 rated player overall. I'll roll the dice at #1/1 that he at least finishes as a top-3 RB, barring unforeseen injury.

Welcome safely back, Wes!! Nice to see you haven't lost any skills as far as Fantasy Football analysis is concerned. Nce observation on Rice with the soon to be departing McGahee (due $ 6 million this year). Two years ago McGahee with14 TDs was a TD thief that matched Marcus with the Chiefs. Last year with 6 TDs not as bad, but had an impact on Rice. McGahee may still be able to read the handwriting on the wall and stay but it would probably be a big paycut. McClain may also be a free agent so The Ravens may end up with somebody like Ronnie Brown. Going to be a very interesting free agency this year.

Pretty hard for me not to put Foster at #1. While I agree that he isn't as talented as ADP or Johnson, he is still very talented and he plays in a great system, surrounded by other top talent, which isn't the case with Peterson and Johnson at this point.

I don't buy into the one year wonder concerns either. Come on, this is a system that made fantasy stars out of Dom Davis and Steve Slaton. Foster is a more complete back than either of those guys. I think he is a cinch for top 5 and has the best situation to be the top back once again. Pretty safe guy to use that number one pick on.

Let's see...Torn meniscus and shoulder injury (both requiring minor surgery) his freshman year, high ankle sprain his sophmore year, another meniscus surgery after his junior year and a deep thigh bruise his senior year.

Not bad, really.

The most glaring dent in his college career is fumbles. They weren't that frequent but came at the worst possible times, it seems.

I could put Foster in around 7-10. Last year he had the element of surprised and a defense that kept him on the field. I expect more offensive balance and a better defense this year.

Agreed sarge, but redistributing his presumed drop in receiving totals into his rushing totals in a more balanced attack still counts for the same points. And as I mentioned earlier, he would have to suffer almost a 20-25% dropoff in order to come back to the field. There's just nothing to support that much of a fall, at this point.

........and Sarge, that same defense you speak of, if they get better, will return him to the field just as quickly with 3 and outs. He really wasn't a secret past game 5, and he also dominated the the stats of breaking the most tackles and yards after first contact. It was rather beast like!

And as for the defense, it probably will get better with health across the board, especially from Ryans. But keep in mind that I believe they're switching to a 3-4 this year, which could mean some growing pains since they don't necessarily have the ideal personnel yet for that scheme. I think I read somewhere that they may try Mario Williams at OLB, which I'm not sure is a great idea since he's the perfect size for a 3-4 end.
Even if they're playing from behind alot, Foster still doesn't come off the field on 3rd downs and obvious passing situations, which is a benefit.

I am also one that feels anything Tate can give them aids foster overall. I just don't feel tate got off of the starting line, and often times backs never do once that happens in the pros.

... thats my biggest problem with Foster. Nothing against him - but I have seen a Foster blow up and be a high draft pick the next year...

If you had the opportunity to actually watch the Texans play every week, you would see that Foster is the real deal. Power, speed, elusiveness, hands...total package.

Foster admitted that he played the entire 2010 season with a torn meniscus in his knee and kept the injury hidden from the team, reports the Sporting News. Foster didn't tell anyone because he was in fear of losing his tenuous grasp on his job as an unproven young back. The revelation makes his league-leading 1,616 rushing yards even more impressive. He already underwent surgery back in February to repair his knee and should be healthy once football starts back up again.

Before this question can be answered i honestly need to see another whole year of consistancy before i trust anyone other than AJ on the Texans roster.

at this point, i'm hoping to draft in picks 5 - 12 as the return on investment seems better . . . it kinda depends on league settings, but i need fa & some preseason to answer some questions

foster - consistency and game planning?
c johnson - qb and protection/blocking?
adp - qb and protection/blocking?
mjd - health, no wr's and qb controversy likely?
charles/rice - game plan/rotatation? - but could be safer options
johnson/white - not seeing them #1 anywhere (-ppr), but rb value should still be there w/ the 2nd rnd pick
rogers/vick/brees/brady/manning - not seeing them #1 anywhere (-6pt td/+yardage) - not a fan of taking a qb in rnd 1 at all, but with the lack of practice time this year there may be an added advantage to the established qb position
