Arbitrator rules for Brees

A federal arbitrator has ruled in favor of Drew Brees and against the Saints in a dispute over the franchise tag. Brees had believed that the FT could only be applied to a player 3 total times during their career while the Saint's stated position was that the CBA allowed each team to tag any player up to 3 times. Now the tag that the Chargers had placed on Brees counts as the first time and the Saints have placed the second FT on Brees this off season. This is huge news for Brees and Saint's fans everywhere. It will get the ball rolling on a new contract and here's why. If the Saints fail to sign Brees to a long term contract now and are forced to place the FT on him again next season, the 3rd and last time, he'd be eligible for a 140% pay raise. That folks would be $40M for the next 2 seasons. Leverage? You betcha!

huge win for Brees! At this point I'd be tempted to play out the market.......but I think this makes this deal get done pretty quickly.

No reason not to pay him his asking price now since he'll get it under the CBA anyway if you keep him the next 2 seasons.

Lots of reasons, Mud.

Saints will be a non-factor in the 2012 season. No reason to pay an aging qb to guide your 6-11 team.

Time to sell high on Brees and start building a team for the 2020s.

Okay why?

Yes the HC and GM have been suspended. But all team moves are basically done, and they have amply filled the holes for players that are suspended. They still have a hugely potent offense, and I think the def. additions are better than those that have left. I just don't see that big a decline. If for no other reason, I see the team rallying, as they did post hurricane to prove folks wrong. You also don't walk away from Brees, not with who they have, and who is coming out...its just stupid
