Andre Smith

Offensive Tackle - Alabama

  • Height -6'4"
  • Weight - 332 (reports of offseason weights between 345 and 380)
Draft Projection - Pre Combine (top 3) - Post Combine (Mid First Round)

NFL Impact

Andre Smith is an outstanding true left tackle who shows extreme in his ability to get down the field on run blocking, and one of the best at protecting the QB's blindside. Smith has been the starting left tackle at Alabama since opening day his freshman year, and was given the 2008 Jacobs Blocking Trophy for being the best blocker in college football. There is nothing bad you can say about this guy, on the field.

Off the field is where things are starting to get sketchy. We aren't looking at a long history of issues, and nothing criminal, but maturity and the ability to make good personal decisions has to be a concern.

  • 2009 Sugar Bowl
Suspended for dealings with an agent. Exactly what took place isn't clear, but any college football player has to know to stay away from these guys.
  • 2009 Combine
This started off bad as Smith decided he wasn't going to workout at the combine. This is a big no-no because it is ultimately your NFL job interview. The expected reason for this was possibly eating a few too many hamburgers and putting on significant weight after the end of the 2008 season.
Smith finally decided to workout, then the night before the OT's were supposed to be on the field, he catches a flight out of town, without telling anybody, to go workout with a personal trainer and ultimately skips the Combine anyway.
Draft With Caution, but you are getting a potentially great anchor.

Gil Brandt, of NFL.com, reports University of Alabama OT Andre Smith measured in at a height of 6-foot-4 1/4 and a weight of 325 pounds at his Pro Day. Smith ran the 40-yard dash in 5.28 seconds and 5.33 seconds, the three-cone drill in 7.88 seconds and the short shuttle in 4.93 seconds. He measured a 25-inch vertical jump, a 7-foot-10 inch broad jump and completed 19 repetitions on the 225-pound bench press. He did look good during his positional drills.

Weird, everything I've heard about this guy says he bombed Pro Day. Must be the media still being pissed at him for bouncing at the combine.

One thing that can't be overlooked is how bad he did on the bench press which for O-Linemen is one part of two indicators of how he'll translate to the pros. Upper body strength and footspeed are the two classic indicators. Also I'm a skinny 33 year old office monkey and last week put up 225 12 times. I say this not to make me look cool as I hate stating the obvious but to point out that this guy didn't do a hell of a ton better as a first round draft prospect.

Just for fun I researched the results of the bench press and found a kicker did 25 reps. His 19 is half of the average number of reps at his position. 5 wide receivers did more reps. 12 defensive backs did more than him.

I know coaches will review his tapes but for all intents and purposes he should be avoided like the plague after this poor demonstration of work ethic.

19 reps!!! WTF!! WOW....I would not touch this kid in the top 1/2 of the first round, too many red flags....not even sure I spend a first on him at all now!

yep, doesn't come across as exactly a workout-warrior. With those measurables, I just don't see how any personnel person can put their head on the chopping block with this kid.

Latest projection I saw had him going to the Redskins.....which would answer duk's point of wondering what personnel person would put his head out on the block for this jiggling pile of goo.

I can't see him lasting until pick # 40. Maybe it is where he should go but ....

ya, not gonna happen (going to Washington). In my opinion, Smith is gonna be extremely lucky to go in the first round unless something dramatic happens.

I sure hope he goes to the draft, and ends up not going at all on the first day of the draft. That would be hilarious to watch.

I don't think so. Call it a gut hunch...but there will be some "genius" GM late in the round that thinks he will make this guy work and fit in. He might get into the second...but I don't think he will.

Just comparing his #'s vs the other top oline using sportslines #'s.

A.Smith -(40) 5.28 -(Bch) 19 -(Vert) 25 -(Brd) 7'10" -(Sht) 4.93 -(3Cn) 7.88
J.Smith -(40) 5.09 -(Bch) 33 -(Vert) 24 -(Brd) 8'00" -(Sht) 4.69 -(3Cn) 7.53
E.Monroe -(40) 5.18 -(Bch) 23 -(Vert) 28.5 -(Brd) 9'02" -(Sht) 4.78 -(3Cn) 7.88
M.Oher -(40) 5.34 -(Bch) 21 -(Vert) 30.5 -(Brd) 8'07" -(Sht) 4.60 -(3Cn) 7.81
E.Britton -(40) 5.14 -(Bch) 24 -(Vert) 28.5 -(Brd) 8'04" -(Sht) 4.91 -(3Cn) 7.87

His Grades -(40) 4th -(Bch) 5th -(Vert) 4th -(Brd) 5th -(Sht) 5th -(3Cn) 5th (tie)

Is it that bad or just less than everyone expected ?? Looks a bit weak for Strength/Explosiveness but the Speed/Quickness looks to be there. Is it easier to Coach/Build Strength or Speed ??

LOL, You are correct. Was looking at them 2 backwards. My point is though that are those #'s bad enough to knock him out of the 1st round ?? His #'s seem comparable to the next few ranked oline. Could he be the 5th/6th OLineman grabbed ??

That would be hilarious. What the hell did this guy do in the off season? Sit on the couch and eat donuts? He might have dropped to the second day of the draft.

I heard from several places that he bombed the Proday measurables, but his drills were still good. A comment from a scout at the combine was that A.Smith didn't do well in the bench press. On top of not doing well in the bench press, he wasn't wearing a shirt and A.Smith is apparently not carrying his body weight in the most pleasant ways. I believe the quote was fat in body rolls. If your not sculpted, I wouldn't suggest trying to impress scouts with your gut hanging out. Another scout was quoted as saying it was the worst Proday showing he'd ever seen.

There is talk of him dropping out of the first round, but also that the Eagles could take him with their second first rounder or the Steelers at the end. Both clubs have head strong coaches that can mold the guy and a team frame work to support the player to improve. Not saying they will, but there is talk. The guy has some skills. The lack of intellegance he's shown with the suspension/leaving the combine and not impressing on the Proday has definitly cost him.

Mike would hear me screaming obscenities from Texas over the Euro-techno he jams to in his rig if the Steelers touch this disgusting fatbody.

He seems to be moving back up to the top 10 ish

from Steve Wyche, NFL.com
3/31/2009 - Alabama OT Andre Smith will have visits/workouts with five teams, including three teams holding top-10 picks. Smith, the Outland Trophy winner whose unannounced departure from last month's combine raised red flags, met with Baltimore (No. 26 pick) the past two days. On deck is Cincinnati, which holds the sixth overall pick. Smith also has visits scheduled later this week and next week with San Francisco (No. 10), Philadelphia (Nos. 21 and 28), the New York Jets (No. 17) and Cleveland (No. 5). ???

Very Interesting (in Arte Johnson accent)

Has Andre Smith moved into the Top 10 for sure?

With the selection of Priority Sports to take over Smith's representation, I was told by a general manager in the top 10 that this move was an 11th-hour save. Before this hire, there was no certain landing spot for Smith, and there was a "piling on" with regard to his work habits and preparation. What a good agent does is bring peace of mind to the clubs. It allows the club to call the agent and know it can get some help dealing with any problems involving the player. The contract is another reason to have a great agent, but for teams, it's very important to have someone you can call and know they will help.
Smith is a lock to go to Cincinnati or Jacksonville (remember, Mike Shula recruited him at Alabama and is on the staff at Jacksonville), and now might go as high as No. 2 to the Rams or No. 4 to the Seahawks.

:hmmm:
