What we know:
1. Indianapolis
2. San Diego
3 & 4 - New England & Cincinnati
*if they remain tied, it looks like NE takes the 3 seed due to strength of victory TB.
** All 4 division winners have been determined

The mess for the WC:
New York Jets - win and in
Baltimore - win and in
Denver - win and need one of the above to lose
Houston - win and need a bunch of help
Pittsburgh - win and need even more help

All 5 are tied for the last 2 spots. I think NYJ and Baltimore control their own destiny but will update when I know for sure. I will add more scenrios later. If you have any info, post here.

So it's the Jets & Denver who control their own destiny. I kinda like that as a Bengals fan. I'd much rather see either of these teams then the possibilities on the outside in the Playoffs. It's damn tough to beat any team 3 times, don't want to have to do that if I am Cincy in rd 1.

The interesting spin is if you are Cincy do you rest or try to win and gain momentum? You could take a mini-bye week and give the jets a pass to the playoff. By doing this, you guarantee that at least one of your divisional rivals are sitting at home next week. Denver could make sure the 2nd one is as well with a win over KC......hmmmm....sounds like a good deal to me.

Jets might have a very easy path. The Colts layed down for the today, and the Bengals may very likely do the same thing next week.

In an interesting twist, the NFL just announced that the Cincy/NYJ's game has been moved to Sunday night. What this allows Cincy to see is exactly what them winning or not winning will do to the match-ups. If NE wins early in the day, they will have nothing to play for. Cincy's decision to play hard will have a HUGE impact on the playoff picture.

I'm just glad Pit needs 3 teams to lose for a sniff.

I wanna see Balt and the Jets in. KC win would be nice, that is Seattles 1st rd pick Denver is screwing up

NE and Cin will prolly both be playing hard for the seed though. That should make it a little tougher on Houston and the Jets. Balt is @ Oak. Pit is @ Mia. Go Phins

If the Jets win, it appears it will set up a Cincy/NYJ rematch in rd 1. Will have to see how it works out, but I think i'm in favor of Cincy resting week 17.

Making sense of the AFC wild-card picture

Posted: December 27th, 2009 | NFL.com Staff | Tags: AFC playoff scenarios, Baltimore Ravens, Denver Broncos, New York Jets, NFL playoff picture
Earlier Sunday, we learned the New England Patriots and Cincinnati Bengals clinched their respective divisions with wins in Week 17.
The four division winners in the AFC playoff picture are now set, as the Indianapolis Colts already had clinched homefield advantage throughout the conference playoffs and the Chargers had clinched the No. 2 seed.
Now it’s time to make sense of the AFC wild-card picture.
As the seedings currently stand, the Denver Broncos are the No. 5 seed and New York Jets the No. 6 seed, due to tie-breakers in strength of victory. Both teams are 8-7.
And, technically, the Baltimore Ravens (8-7), Pittsburgh Steelers (8-7), Houston Texans (8-7), Miami Dolphins (7-8) and Jacksonville Jaguars (7-8) are still alive.
However, the tie-breaker scenario will change in Week 17, and the result will change the order of the seven teams still alive for the two playoff spots. When the Baltimore Ravens face the Oakland Raiders next Sunday, the common games tie-breaker will then come into play for the Broncos, Jets and Ravens.
If the Jets defeat the Bengals, they would hold a three-way tie-breaker over the Ravens and Broncos (if the teams remain tied). If the Ravens defeat the Raiders, they would then hold the tiebreaker over the Broncos because of the 30-7 win in Week 8.
It’s a lot to take in, but what it all means is that the Jets and Ravens control their playoff destiny. If those teams win next week, they’re in.

Looks like a Jets win would pretty much guarantee a rematch Wild-Card Weekend

Has it ever happened before that 2 games on wildcard weekend were repeats of the previous weeks games. And at the same venues as well. Wow
It has only happened 5 times in history I believe. It could actually happen 3 times this year with Dallas/Philly, GB/Ari, Cincy/NYJ all possible rematches.

The Cincy/NYJ game would be at a different venue as this one is at the Jets and a playoff rematch would be in Cincy.

Im not a big fan of this whole rematch thing. Who has anything to play for here?

I think Philly and the Jets are the only ones who do. Everyone else is locked in right?

Dallas is playing for the Division title and a home playoff game. Both teams in that one have a lot to play for. Green Bay and Zona not so much, and Cincy will not be playing for anything.

If Pitt & NE hold on the playoff picture becomes pretty clear.

If either Baltimore or New York Jets stumble, Pitt will be in. Denver will need both Ravens and Jets to lose, if this happens, it will not matter if Denver wins or loses, they would make it either way.
