ACC adds Pittsburg & Syracuse

Re: ACC adda Pittsburg & Syracuse

Its the start of a civil war. Texas becomes its own country again and joins Notre Dame in irrelevance. Big12 implodes with pieces going to the Big East, Big12, and Pac10.

BigTen sits back and watches - waits for Texas and Notre Dame to realize how dire their problems are and then pulls the rug out from them when they ask to join... and gets a good laugh with the rest of the country.

I haven't seen the details but I assume this is only football? Can't imagine SU and Pitt leaving the BBall BigEast super-conference... even for the ACC.

Re: ACC adda Pittsburg & Syracuse

I disagee Zach. I think now the Big 10 goes big time to get the east coast draw they wanted. They wanted to add UConn or Rutgers or both to their conf. That would give them draws for NYC and Boston, which would be huge for their demographics. They then will add two more later, Notre Dame and probably Missouri or Texas depending on what happens with the Big 12 and Texas A&M.

Just my opinion, but would bet money on it.

Rumors are also flying that Uconn and or Rutgers trying to also join the ACC

No chance for Kansas, Kansas State, and Iowa State in the BigTen - they do not fit into the CIC

Iowa State fits in well in the Bigwhatever academically, geographically, and beating Iowa under Ferentz. Haven't researched the Kansas schools academics, so not sure if they fit.

Yeah, don't see the B10 adding the also rans of the Broken 12. Notre Dame may have to find a home if the Super Conferences take over and that will lead them to the B10. No idea on Iowa St as I have not heard much about them, but I don't see what they add. Missouri I think will finally get their wish and be invited. Maybe one of the Kansas schools, but I don't think either will get in.

I could see the B10 actually waiting for the dust to settle on all of this....then again, maybe not....who really knows. Just don't see the 4 listed getting in, just don't fit what the B10 has historically tried to do.

I just swiped this from Wikopedia... but it starts to explain part of what I am saying on why athletics is only part of the equation on who is invited into the BigTen.
______________

CIC universities confer, on average, 15% of all Ph.D. degrees awarded annually in the United States.

CIC members engage in $6 billion in funded research, receiving some 12 percent of the total federal research funds awarded annually (18 percent of the National Science Foundation total, and 15.7 percent of the USDA total).

Collectively, CIC members employ more than 29,000 full-time faculty members and enroll approximately 400,000 undergraduate and graduate students.

CIC member libraries own more book volumes (more than 80 million volumes) than the 10 campuses of the University of California system (34 million) and the Ivy League (64 million).
_______________

There is also the other aspect of the CIC that allows students at any member university to go to any other member university for a semester at the cost they pay at their home university. Say you are a student at the University of Iowa but need five classes that Iowa does not offer. Ohio State on the other hand offers those classes. You are able to just go to Ohio State for a semester and take those classes.

Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC)

This is why I keep saying that membership in the BigTen goes way beyond geography and sports.

Which is why Iowa State is a great fit. They have been a member of the Assoc. of American Universities, the preeminent association of elite research institutions, since 1958. Kansas and Missouri are also among the 34 public institutions that are members. Another public AAU member, Pitt, just bailed to the ACC. Rutgers and Texas are the only other AAU members out there that the Bigcantcount are probably considering. The only non-AAU member of the Bigwhatever is Nebraska.

Kansas State could make a pledge with the conference to upgrade their research and academics to AAU level. Kansas State has had success in football and basketball, but adds nothing market wise if you already have KU in the fold.

Big 12 will be no more next year. 4 to the Pac 12 and so far 2 to the SEC and so that leaves 4 teams scrambling for something. Big East lost 2 with another 2 probably going, so thats 4 gone from them to the ACC. Doesnt leave much of a big east or formally big 12. I have to agree with Sarge and they will come together , maybe under a new name. All this is really forcing ND to join somewhere i think.

Why not? Its a good move for them and Pitt i think. Much better conference and much better teams. ACC basketball is going to be insane now.
