in the hole
Thought it would be interesting to talk about who you would like to see your favorite team take in the upcoming draft. It will be very different this year if a labor agreement can't be reached beforehand, since that means teams will not be able to fill some of their needs before the draft takes place.
At this point I am going to assume this is how it is going to be, which is unfortunate since my favorite team, Detroit, is finally becoming competitive after finally firing their former GM (who shall remain nameless). Picking up G Rob Sims, CB's Chris Houston and Alphonso Smith, and DT Corey Williams. for late round picks were great moves to fill major needs. Vanden Bosch and Burleson were good FA additions also. I really think GM Martin Mayhew knows what he is doing. Here is a nice article about him.Lions GM Martin Mayhew lets his deals do the talking | detnews.com | The Detroit News
As of now the biggest needs to fill for the Lions are 1)CB, LB, and OL. 2)WR, RB, S. When it comes to this years draft, I think Mayhew and Co. will refine their BPA philosophy. I am 99% sure they will choose the highest rated player out of LB, CB, and OT. I would be a little surprised to see them go with a tackle though.
Barring trades, here is my pre-combine wish list for Detroit:
1.13 - If either Prince Amukamara or Von Miller fall to 13, I would be thrilled. Realistically I don't see that happening though. That leaves a choice between OT's Solder and Castonzo, CB's Brandon Harris and Jimmy Smith, and LB Ayers. I would like any of these, but am a little wary about Solder and Smith. They have high upsides, but are possible busts. Ayers could be included here, but he is versitile and athletic enough to contribute right away in our weak LB core. So, I would be happy with Castonzo, Ayers, or Harris. Cameron Jordan could end up being the choice if they stick to BPA. The DL is one of our strong points, but BPA is a good philosophy. A trade down here would be nice if we get an offer, an extra 3rd would be nice to trade down later in the 1st.
Rounds 2,3, are a little dependent on the 1st round pick, and those who surprisingly start to free-fall. Being realistic I would be happy with S Rahim Moore,LB's Bruce Carter, Justin Houston, Mason Foster, Mark Herzlich, or Dontay Moch, CB's Aaron Williams, Curtis Brown, Brandon Burton or Ras-I Dowling. At Gaurd I like Hudson or Moffitt. I like both Wisniewski and O'Dowd at center. Raiola is undersized and average at best, he needs to be replaced soon. A WR in round 2 is a little too early for me, but if Titus Young or Leonard Hankerson fell to us in round 3 I would be OK with that.
So, that's my early wish list. What's yours?
