What's Up With The "Slot" Position

I have been reading a lot about Wrs being used in the slot position. We have come to see some nicely productive 3rd Wrs deveop in the slot position. But if you have been reading up on camp action there has been a lot talk about many Wrs being used in the slot including # 1 Wrs. Now some of this is an effort to put a talented Wr in a spot on the field where he may not be expected to be. But does this really fool the D, does a putting say a Roddy White in the slot for a play make him more effective or less effective, operating from a position you don't normally play and running routes you don't normally practice. Do you like your starting Wrs playing the X or Y flanker positions or do you think this maneuvering will actually increase production?

Some guys are better in there than on the outside. I've noticed that Crayton puts up better #'s when he is the #3 guy versus being #2. Some of that is probably the speed of the guys covering them and some is probably just the play calling
