Johnny Knox looks impressive Thu Jun 4, 08:10 PM
Bob LeGere, from the Daily Herald, reports that based on early returns in OTA's, this year's top Bears rookie has been wide receiver Johnny Knox, the fifth-round pick from Abilene Christian.
Our view: Knox, who is arguably the fastest player on the field, has shown sticky fingers in almost every practice, catching anything within his grasp and rarely having a bobble let alone a drop. Knox has crazy body control and can twist and contort his body to make nearly any catch. Rashied Davis' time as the starting slot receiver in Chicago could be coming to a close because of the talented rookie

Did they just find Cutler another Eddie Royal? Faster than Hester. :koolaid:

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then. I trumpeted this guy on high leading up to draft day on here and the WBUL initial broadcast.

He outperformed most of the 1st-3rd round WR prospects in the Combine receiving drills and I believe DHB was the only guy with a better 40 time. He was the real deal down here at Abilene Christian during the 2008 season in what was a conventional wide open offensive scheme, so he's not a product of a gimmicky setup.

I don't see him as the next Eddie Royal because he never struck me as a high-volume receptions guy, but I wouldn't be too far off comparing him to Alvin Harper of the early-90's Cowboy dynasty. Perfect #2 wideout who doesn't rack up a ton of catches, but averages 17 yards plus with homerun ability.

Wes was all over this one. You could, IMO, pin him to be Cutler's Eddie Royal for the season, meaning that he'll be the #2 guy for Jay. However, like Wes stated, I don't think he'll put up Eddie Royal numbers.

What do you see the pecking order will be then in Chicago this year if Knox ends up as the #2 guy?

Is Hester projected as #1 or Bennett?

Who follows up behind? Davis and then Iglesius?

Not completely, Cooley. In fact I would expect him to be on the field most of the year. Keeping him quite for now, but as Ryan and I said, we're looking forward to hearing what Cutler says about his WRs.

Knox was moving up the boards prior to the draft but I thought Iglesias would start out in front of him with Knox possibly overtaking him in the depth chart long-term. I have not seen or followed Knox so I would definitely defer to someone like W'Dog who has but I was among those who thought the transition would keep him on a more typical 3 year track to becoming relevant where Ig's was more a initial success and then fade option for the Windy City.

If anything, I could see Bennett as the #1 due to familiarity (Vandy connection), Iglesias as the Royal clone (more receptions, lesser YPC), and Knox starting out as the #3.
This sudden influx/development of pure WR talent should allow Hester to focus solely on being the elite returner he was before the receiver experiment. I'd still bring him in on 4 and 5 WR sets, but he never excited me at all as a #1 or #2 wideout.

Wes has a great point here. Your opinions on the final pecking will be based a lot on if you have believed the Hester Hype that the Bears have been throwing around the last couple of years. If you believed that hype you may have a dud pick in Hester.

You should follow all the camp action here at Sports Outlaw. ;)

Personally I have not been a big fan but it is always good to know if others do.

I have never been really convinced of the Hester Hype myself. I sort of placed it in the same category as the Falcons yearly "We will get Norwood the ball more this year" proclaimations. cn

Preaching to the choir?

Lol, I have never been the marketing type. ;)

That said, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that we do have a Championship Inter Boards League team here that researches every nuance of camp activity looking for up and comers among the NFL ranks.
