There'll be no rookies at this years NFL draft if the Players Association can help it

rotoworld,

The NFL Players Association is in the process of blocking prospects from attending next month's NFL draft in New York.
The NFLPA has already contacted at least 17 top prospects and "informed them not to go" to Radio City Music Hall if they receive invitations to the April 28-30 draft. So when the No. 1 overall pick is announced, Roger Goodell would not hand him his jersey as is custom. It would continue to create an awkward feel in the football community. "As of right now, this is 100 percent happening," one source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. "This is going down."

This is the part that really sucks,to me.

These kids have been dreaming of playing in the NFL since they were old enough to dream.

I'm sure there are some draftees who are tickled to be a part of the "Players Rights Movement" but I would bet that the large majority of these guys wishes this would just blow over and allow them their day of realization.

Very ture Tekie not to mention the TV folks can't be pleased. It kind of tickles me though to see the players union step into a pile of do and alienate more of their fans. I walked away from MLB lock, stock, and barrel over ther greed.

This is a lose/lose for the kids.

If you show up, you immediately are behind the 8 ball in the union, which you have to join ...., and it will cost them.

Then again, if you don't show up, and you are not really part of the union, you get no benefit, and no ultimate dream either.

This just sucks.

Although on Mike and Mike this morning they were saying the union has ammended their statement. Evidently the fan pressure is huge AGAINST the union for using these kids as tools. Now its we suggest you don't go.

A top-ranked prospect said he plans to attend the 2011 NFL Draft in New York despite reports saying the NFL Players Association has asked top prospects to boycott the annual event, National Football Post reported Tuesday.

LSU star cornerback Patrick Peterson, who is currently projected by Scout.com as the third overall pick in its mock draft, told the website no one has contacted him in reference to the potential walkout.

"I heard about that," Peterson said. "No one has contacted me to go to New York or not go to New York. I would like to go if possible. That's what you play football for.

"That's a big moment to go up there and shake the commissioner's hand and get that jersey and hat. It means a lot. I definitely want to go, and no one has told me not to go. So, we'll see what happens. "

rotoworld,
The decertified NFL Players Association is considering creating an alternative event in New York for top prospects to attend in lieu of the NFL Draft.
Instead of shaking the hand of commissioner Roger Goodell on stage, the early first-round picks would greet their new teammates in a show of solidarity. Agent Drew Rosenhaus is already advising his top prospects not to attend the draft. Goodell has assured that the draft will go on without the presence of top draft picks.

The fact that there is even a union in a profession where just being a rookie player puts you in the top 10% in earnings is outrageous. That agents, who are not even players, are represented by the NFLPA is even more so. Were I in that position, I'd personally put a call in to Demaurice Smith and tell him to GFY.

From Rotoworld:

Georgia WR A.J. Green is among the 20 draft-eligible prospects who've been invited to Radio City Music Hall for April 28-30.

Other confirmed invites have gone to Adrian Clayborn, Blaine Gabbert, Julio Jones, J.J. Watt, Aldon Smith, Jake Locker, Von Miller, Da'Quan Bowers, Tyron Smith, Prince Amukamara, Nick Fairley, Marcell Dareus, and Mark Ingram. So that makes 14 of the 20 players. Jones and Clayborn accepted the invite and will attend. Locker has opted to spend the weekend with his family.

Good idea, Jake:

NFL Network's Mike Lombardi and Charley Casserly both criticized Jake Locker's Wednesday Pro Day for being "too easy."

Locker did focus on the short passing game in the scripted, 42-throw workout, and missed on his only two true deep-ball tries. "Mostly short throws, over the middle," is how Casserly described the Pro Day. "If you're a senior in high school, you'd better have an A-plus in this workout." Lombardi noted "not a lot of decision makers in attendance," which reportedly could indicate that Locker is not high on many teams' draft boards.
