Mack Brown has added his second new assistant coach. Bo Davis has been hired to coach defensive tackles after spending the last four years as defensive line coach at Alabama. Davis replaces Mike Tolleson who retired in early December.
Davis also has NFL experience, coaching the defensive line and serving as assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Miami Dolphins in 2006. Davis played defensive tackle at LSU and was All-SEC in 1992. Davis is a native of Magee, MS but has Texas ties. He was an assistant coach at Galena Park North Shore High School in the Houston area from 1997-2002.
"This is a great opportunity for me and my family," Davis said. "Having coached at North Shore High School with David Aymond, recruiting in Texas for much of my career and with my wife being from Houston, it's kind of like coming home. When Coach Brown contacted me, I thought it was a great opportunity and one I just needed to take."
"Having worked with Coach Saban and learning so much from him, I thought it was another great opportunity to work with Coach Brown," Davis said. "He's a guy I've really respected and enjoyed getting to know. He and Coach Saban are legends in this sport. Just to have the chance to work with coaches like that is something any coach in America would want to experience."
"We're really excited that Bo decided to join our staff," Brown said. "He is a tremendous young coach who brings energy, enthusiasm and toughness to our program. His players have had a great deal of success, and he has been a part of some of the best defenses and teams in the nation throughout his career. On top of that, Bo is very familiar with this state having coached Cory Redding and working with David Aymond at North Shore High School for several years. He's a tremendous recruiter who has spent a lot of time recruiting in Texas, so he can really hit the ground running."
That starts immediately with a new recruiting period opening up today.
Davis joins receivers coach Darrell Wyatt as the second new hire at UT after five of the nine assistants have left the program.
