So the first "live" scrimmage was held this weekend, with the team being told this was for all intents and purposes a game situation.
QB Garrett Gilbert, the #2 turnover producer in the nation last year came into the season with a clean slate, but is battling with Connor Wood, David Ash, and Case McCoy of the Cleveland McCoys for the starting job.
In keeping with his fine work last season, Gilbert threw two interceptions and had an overall lousy day. For those keeping track since the end of last season, in what amounts to roughly 3 quarters of "game" time, Gilbert has turned the ball over 3 times. During the scrimmage, Gilbert led the offense to ONE first down. Just one.....
Case McCoy, the best of the bunch at the spring game, had a turnover as well, and is looking more like a backup who just needs time to grow and get better and stronger. McCoy did throw a TD but sources say it was a duck that was a much better play by the WR than it was a good throw. He has terrible footwork and the least arm strength of all the QBs. (sounds like a #3 QB to me)
Connor Wood did nothing of note, is struggling with accuracy, a MUST in the Harsin offense, and looks to be the most likely to transfer.
The problem for Mack is the youngest of the buch, true freshman David Ash, continues to light it up in practice and did well in the scrimmage. Ash is very accurate and is making plays with his feet. He is getting 1st team reps. He was mistake free in the scrimmage according to Harsin. He shows the best leadership in the huddle.
With less than 3 weeks to opening day, the staff needs to trim this down to a 1 or 2 man race, and all reports indicate David Ash, the guy with the least amount of time in the offense, is the best man for the job, but starting a true frosh tells the other 3 guys they wont play unless they transfer.
Ash made it clear before he signed his LOI he intended to do everything he possibly could to take this team back to respectability and take Gilberts place, and it sure looks like he is doing it.
