TE position.....how do you see it in 2011?

In the last several years we have seen the TE get deeper than I ever remember it. In 2010 3 TE's scored 10 TD's...in 2009 3 scored 10 or more.....from 1999 to 2008 (10 years) the NFL only saw 7 seasons by TE's with 10 or more TD's! So in the last 2 years we have seen almost as many as we have in the last 10 combined and more than we have in the last 9 combined (5)!!

So it's obvious we are in the golden age for TE's.....so with this position being deeper and more valuable, who do you see standing out in 2011?

In ppr leagues, the top 5 last year were: Witten, Davis, Gates, Lewis, Cooley.

I see Witten and gates staying at the top for one more year at least. Davis I see tailing off, have a feeling by injury, but who knows, all I know is I don't see him in the top 5. I see Clark coming back from injury and having a nice year and Finely will come back pretty strong, but just miss the top 5. That leave 2 more spots. I am giving one to Pettigrew who continues to develop in Detroit and will be the next TE to go over the 10 TD mark and my last one is a dark horse. I see Jared Cook from Tennessee having a huge breakout year and enters the top 5 by year end.

So your final 2011 top 5 TE's in no order would be: Gates, Witten, Clark, Pettigrew, Cook

Graham and Moeaki are the dark horses in this and I would replace Petti and Cook with them. Tennessee is a mess and Petti is in a time share. Both can be had cheaper in most drafts too.

I can't argue too much here....but I will ;)

First I think Witten repeats. As much as Austin and maybe Bryant get better, the red zone belongs to Witten.
Second, Gates should be healthy to start...but for how long? I love to draft him and then trade him mid-season for a boost. I just don't think he can stay healthy. But even with 10 games...he scores alot to be in the top 5.
Davis is scary due to the offense. Its new, new coach, new OC, maybe new Qb. Still, he is the best receiving target on the team...till a certain wr finally breaks out.
Lewis may again be top, due to no one else to throw to. But I think he falls out this year.
I am all over Pettigrew with ya. Think he could be monster. Same for Graham in N.O.

So I see:
Witten
Gates
Pettigrew
Davis
Graham - N.O.

Then I think you have a few guys who may spike or may not: Gonzales, Cook, Cooley, Lewis and either Finley or his replacement. I also hope Celek reverts back some now that he is healthy.

Don't think he cracks the top 5, but hard to believe that Gronkowski scored 10 TD's last year and gets no love whatsoever

I'm with you Chris, Gronk was quietly effective and didn't make much of an impression of FFers at all. We might see a doulbling of the number of TEs with 10 TDs this year.

My ONLY issue with Gronk, is the other TE they have, who basically split the year in receptions. Not sure the TD's won't split also.

The tough thing about Gronk and Hernandez is you never know who will get the receptions. They seemed to alternate games last year, or go 2 games good and 1 or 2 games non-existant. I'll stay away from both becuase I hate playing the "lottery" with my starting roster.

I don't think we see Gronk lose TD's, he comes out on top as the red zone threat there while Hernandez picks up the yardage points in the open field. Yes it's a shared workload, but I'll take the guy that gets thrown to in the end zone.

This sounds vaguely familiar to me. When they had two other TEs they were fond of. One of them is now the starter in Cleveland.

I just don't buy that. They throw to who they want, and I don't think anyone can say for sure who will get what. Kind of like Shanny and this Rbs.

I love Moeaki - just going to take a bit for me to trust him to stay healthy - I think last year is the longest stretch I have seen him be healthy in the last six years.

I agree on Graham. But not on Moeaki. KC has said they want more production from the Wr spot. They have drafted for that. They have a rb that is great for receptions. I just am not convinced Moeaki will ever be a main target. He will get some..but not alot.

Pettigrew isn't in a time share. They plan to run two TE sets, but they also plan to run alot of three Wr. In both cases he is the main TE target, not Scheffler.

Six years? He was a rookie last year? How was that the longest stretch you have seen him in six years? Did you watch him in high school? Not sure your comment makes any sense...

I was looking at ADP's on FF Calc. and a couple of things stood out to me...

Pettigrew @ 13.2 will end up being a steal. Put up respectable #'s last year, had 111 targets. He's only gonna get better IMO.

Cooley is going in the mid 12th and he averaged 8.5 pts a game in my .5 ppr league. Vernon Davis averaged just under 10 per game and he's going at the end of the 5th.

Kellen Winslow had a decent season, his numbers will improve this year IMO. He's going in the 12th, seems like some value there.

Graham could have a great breakout year, not sure I'm willing to take a gamble on him at this point based on where he's being taken if I can get one of the above said guys that much later.

Or he caught 45 balls and was only 3 pts away from being a top 10 ppr TE..........

3 pts away from being top 10? More like 20 pts. Also, he scored more than 100 less pts than the top TEs. Check the stats and the game log...this guy had 2 big games which skewed his stats. Being in the top ten for TEs isn't that impressive considering the huge disparity between the top 3 or 4 and the rest of the field.

That being said, he does have skill, but it's clear Hernandez has more talent. Gronk is of a product of the Patriot's system more than anything else.

Pettigrew is a stud TE coming into his own...GO LIONS!

Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski earned close to $2 million in bonuses after triggering several incentives in an impressive rookie season. Analysis: Tom Brady's favorite red-zone weapon racked up 10 touchdowns, second all-time for a rookie tight end behind only Hall of Famer "Iron" Mike Ditka. His numbers over the final eight regular-season games project out to 56 receptions, 796 yards, and 14 TDs over a full season. He's a borderline TE1 even with an obvious touchdown regression in 2011.

Aaron Hernandez finished 37th out of 38 qualifying tight ends in Pro Football Focus' drop percentage metric for the 2010 season. The hip injury wasn't the only factor in Hernandez's lost playing time down the stretch. His nine drops on 55 catchable balls landed him in the doghouse, playing a part in his 486 snaps versus 756 for fellow rookie Rob Gronkowski. Hernandez was billed as sure-handed entering the league, so fantasy owners can expect a bounce-back in his performance going forward. He's an ideal "buy" in Dynasty leagues.

This guy is gonna be a beast!

The Star Tribune reports Green Bay Packers TE Jermichael Finley (knee) is working out at Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald's passing camp in Minnesota this week.

-Jimmy graham is going to invade the top 6
-Owen Daniels is a great, available relatively late, TE prospect for this season, especially in ppr.
-I just can't spend a wad on Clark, coming off injury with Tamme in the wings. I feel Clark is smoother but they can now rest him some through his numerous yearly dings and bring in a guy who can also get it done and Peyton has confidence in.
- The true SAFE #1 TE though give me Finley a round later or Graham and handful of rounds later.
-Cooley had a great ppr year last year. I wouldn't want him as my #1 though. Great #2 canidate. That Fred Davis dude is closing ground and the QB situation still scares me, though it worked for Cooley last year.
-Rookie Kendricks is worth drafting early in Rookie drafts this year. He and Bradford are gonna be an item!
-Witten is #2 as far as safety is concerned in TE's, but again, I would rather wait for Finely just a bit or wait much longer for Grahm and a Cooley type Te.
-Zach Miller, moeaki, Pettigrew........$h!t these guys are everywhere this year. I just can't see spendding high on Gates or Witten when they are dropping off of trees!

He is in the right offense. I just don't know he can stay healthy all year. He hasn't shown the ability.

But you gotta love the talent.
