The Pittsburgh Steelers plan to rely a lot on RB Rashard Mendenhall this season, reports Mark Kaboly, of The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said Mendenhall is such an explosive player that the team does not want to take him off of the field. Mendenhall, the team's starting tailback, is expected to serve as the team's third-down back, goal-line back and possibly also as their short-yardage back. The team plans to use him far more than the 242 carries he had last season.
Steelers offensive coordinator Bruce Arians compares Rashard Mendenhall's skills to those of Marshall Faulk and Edgerrin James. Analysis: "He is a good combination of both those guys," Arians said. "He has that kind of skill set. There is no doubt he can do what those two did." It's high praise from Arians, who saw both backs up close while he served on the Colts coaching staff from 1998-2000. Arians plans to use Mendenhall as a do-everything back this year, increasing his role in the passing game and at the goal-line. A true workhorse, he's a legit late-first round fantasy option.
