Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger has agreed to restructure his contract. The restructuring will save the Steelers around $8 million in salary cap space. Roethlisberger doesn't want the Steelers to lose Mike Wallace to free agency, so he's kicking back a share of his contract to make sure Pittsburgh can afford to keep him.

I heard a few other guys on the team were gonna do the same thing. Thats what I call teamwork. Though in Ben's case, having such a talented WR like Wallace can only do good things for Ben's stats which is always a nice thing.

Well, lets be clear, he is doing this to get them out of cap hell. They still are over cap for the year, wallace is still a pipe dream.

It's not unusual to see a player help out his team but it's still refreshing every single time it takes place in today's world.

i have always been confused on this. When a deal is restructured does that mean the player is still getting the same amount of money just in different bonuses etc. or is he actually giving up money?

right, just restructured to help out this upcoming year is what i got out of it. The money is still there, it's just shifted around.

I suppose it does mean less money in that a player agrees to 'defer' money that would have been paid sooner and now will be paid later.
Since this won't, as Phicin says, keep Wallace, one has to figure Ben knows this all to well and is just making a PR move because he would like to stay a Steeler.

usually what happens is the total amount goes from unguaranteed salary per year, to lower salary per year and a huge signing bonus that can be split over multiple years. So you have less money in that year. But eventually the team has to pay, as the bonus is guaranteed money. So its a win for the player as they get their money and its up front.

So why is a player such a good guy when he restructures? Seems to me that he is sureing up his money.

I guess by doing it in the first place suggest that you are doing something to help keep somebody. If you had no intentions of wanting to aide in keeping someone on the team then I suppose you would not do it. Even though it may be insignificant it the amounts of money and time I am sure it cost a little of both to do the restructuring. I think it's builds moral to a point on a team when players do this so to me that is being a good guy.
