Singletary: Smith will need to win the starting job

Coach Mike Singletary said Tuesday that the onus is on Alex Smith to win the starting quarterback job from Shaun Hill.

After first insisting that neither quarterback is leading the competition, Singletary qualified his statement, adding that "in principle" it's Hill's job "until proven differently." The decision is unlikely to be finalized until preseason action.

Interesting. Hill is a guy who sucks in practice and plays well in games. If Hill is blowing in practice and Smith still cant beat him out, me thinks the hammer is about to fall on Alex Smith.

this is how it should be. Hill outperformed Smith last year and I think Hill gives them the best chance to win games this year. The 49ers need to turn the page from their Alex Smith experiment and just cut ties.
