WR Shipley considered 'best newcomer' Thu Jun 17, 07:32 PM
Geoff Hobson, from Bengals.com, notes if the camp had a Best Newcomer it was probably rookie wide receiver Jordan Shipley, the third-round draft pick from Texas. He had a particularly productive day Thursday, as did the passing game in what seemed to be its most synced up performance of the week. The coaches have talked about Shipley's naturalness in the slot and WR coach Mike Sheppard is impressed with his after-hours approach. "He's got plenty of tape on T.J. (Houshmandzadeh) and Wes Welker and the other good slot players in the league and he'll watch it," Sheppard said. "He's the guy walking into my office about three hours after practice and says, 'What are you doing?' and I say, 'I'm waiting for you.' 'Good, can we watch practice?' "
Our view: Jordan Shipley is one of our favorite rookie receivers this year. He was a catching machine for the Texas Longhorns, and was arguable the most dangerous possession receiver in all of college football. Shipley will catch everything thrown at him, and has the elusiveness to pick up plenty of yards after the catch. He's competing with veteran Bubba Caldwell to be the Bengals slot receiver this year.

That leaves a scrum for the last 2 spots:

  • Matt Jones - Former 1st rd pick of the Jags. You know the history, can he become the latest 2nd chance story in Cincy?
  • Jerome Simpson - 2008 2nd rd pick of the Bengals, has not put it all together yet, might be running out of time to do it in Cincy.
  • Quan Cosby - UFA last year made the team as a Punt returner last year. Former teammate Shipley may make his path to the team much more difficult.
  • Maurice Purify - 2nd yr man out of Nebraska, up hill battle to make the team.
  • Dezmon Broscoe - 6th year pick from Kansas, nice complement in styles. Big, strong and physical.

"Its An Outrage"
If M.Jones can live up to his former #1 self he should have no problem locking up the final WR roster spot, its a long shot tho

J.Shipley should be the #2 WR soon enough, watched film of his college days and looks good enough to make it at the NFL level

As my momma always said "IF is a mighty big word to be so short" 007. I'm pulling for Simpson to make the cut.
