CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports the Saints will not fire Sean Payton, but the team would be open to trading their head coach.

Surely the Saints are not this stupid, surely?

Gotta blame someone.....and they are in a fight for ownership....don't want to lose fan base. Shame, all coaches have down seasons.

I will say though, Saints need more youth, not sure they have a long term plan.

The Saints have been in the bottom 5 ranked defenses for the last 4 years. I understand Payton does not deal with defense and he is an offensive guru but as the head coach he has a responsibility for the whole teams performance.

Keeping Ryan as DC as long as they did should be blamed on Payton solely. The fact that they only fired him after a rookie QB puts up almost 400 passing yds and 4 tds during the loss at home to the hapless Titans says all you need to know.

With the offense the Saints have had the past years under Payton they should have made more play to be SB contender but the defense has hamstrung this team into a perennial 7-9 to 9-7 standing each year.

The league had a bit to do with the results the last few years with the penalties they handed down due to Bounty Gate. However Ryan should have never been hired and certainly should have been canned before this season. Considering that Payton doesn't like Ryan I think someone else pushed to keep him on board.

We need something, any thing that resembles a defense.
That has definitely been the Saints downfall this season. They cannot cover, tackle, or get pressure on the QB at all. The Saints offense has still been decent most of the season, but when you are constantly having to score a ton of points to win it makes it very difficult.

We haven't had a good defense since the Dome Patrol days with Pat Swilling and Ricky Jackson et al forming the best LB corp in the league.

Yeah but your offense was so high powered back than that it covered up for it. Now the offense is good, but not good enough to keep up for the lack of what the defense does.

I have been following the Ravens and football in general since I was 10 years old. I just started doing fantasy football this year.
