The NFL announced that Vincent Jackson has been officially been suspended three games for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. To be appealed/ reduced? Maybe? Holdout? Maybe?

When I read the news on MSN this morning I was surprised that it had only now became official. This has been talked about for so long I had thought it was already a done deal.

this is now official? Wasn't this posted on ESPN a week ago or so? :wtf:

Oh well,
Here is the kicker that everyone needs to think about.

Per an article I read at PFT, there is an argument whether his 3 games count during his hold out or not.

Per one source Jackson feels if he holds out till week 10 or whatever, that the suspension will be over.
San Diego on the other hand feels that if he comes back in week 10 or so......that THEN the suspension takes place.

Net, potentially, if he holds out, he will basically lose the whole damn season if SD is correct. Buyer beware here.....

If he's holding out then the clock should not be started on his 3 weeks suspension.
I agree. However there is precidence. I can't remember who, but there have been players in the past injured that missed games due to that and it counted I believe.

If I get time I will try to do some digging.

An injury is fine to let the time count, but if the player is holding out, the suspension should not be enforced until the player stops the holdout

And the answer is...
rotoworld,
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello confirmed that unsigned restricted free agent Vincent Jackson will not be required to sign his tender before serving his three-game suspension.

V-Jax is a special case because he hasn't signed. Players under contract and holding out must serve their suspensions once they return to the team. Jackson will miss Weeks 1-3 regardless, which makes it more likely that he will opt against signing his tender until at least Week 4. NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora points out that Chargers can place Jackson on the roster exempt list -- without pay -- until the third game after he reports. Jackson would then have to report by Week 7 to avoid losing a year of accrued service time.

Yep, thats what I figured. So he won't have to serve it when he gets back, so he has even more incentive not to show up.

Again Buyer beware!

Many have assumed that San Diego Chargers unsigned wide receiver Vincent Jackson would wait until Week 10 until signing his contract tender, in order to play the minimum games required to secure an accrued season, and thus move closer to his departure from the team via unrestricted free agency.
However, that may not be the case. Should the Chargers opt to follow all avenues allowed to them under the CBA, Jackson might have to make a decision on whether to sit out the entire season by Week 7.

First, a note on his three-game suspension -- confirmed Tuesday by the Chargers. It will be considered served after Week 3, regardless of whether Jackson has signed his tender. As an unsigned free agent, the suspension does not toll, or roll over (if Jackson were a signed player holding out, then the suspension would toll).
So, his status as a suspended player will not impact any decision about if or when to sign a tender with the Chargers. However, there are other factors in play. According to the league office, "the CBA may impose additional restrictions depending on the date that the player ultimately signs and reports to his club."

The latest news coming out yesterday gives me some slight reason to hope that we will see Jackson on a football field this season.

While we are getting excited as FFers, so far all he has done is not signed his tender offer and missed some OTAs. VJ could end all this and sign and just miss 3 games.

I'd be happy to keep him for an 8th round draft choice in my keeper league if he'll sign.

I don't see Jackson back this year. Not in SD.

First, I disagree with Coach alltogether. If he were going to sign it, he would have done so already before the team cut the offer.
Second, if he does hold out, even if he comes back week 7, the team will put him inactive for 3, which still means week 10. With little or no football activity till then. He won't be worth a tinkers damn then. Sorry, not going to happen.

No, I think the best scenario here is for him to be dealt, and that team work a contract with him, or agree to, then he can sign his tender and be dealt. Remember, he can't be traded til he signs the tender.

I'm still on the fence to whether he will play this season or not. If he plays, I could very well see him on another team. But I totally forgot that he has to sign his tender before he can be traded.

I don't think he'll be traded though that isn't the popular opinion. Rumor is that he'd only bring the Chargers 1 second round choice now, if that and I can't see them dealing him for that.
