Like the name of the Jets strength and conditioning coach. Now everyone and their dog knows who Sal Alosi is. Shame on you Sal....now on to the show:
AFC East - The Jets are in real trouble. Seems theyve forgotten how to run the football, and now look like they will head into this weeks must win contest minus the services of Shonn Greene. The Sanchize sucks right now, and its not getting any better. The Jets WRs were open, he just couldnt hit the broad side of a barn. These guys will be one and done in the tough AFC if they dont get their crap together. New England continued to kick ass, demolishing the Bears by halftime in a snow bowl, clinching a playoff birth, and quite possibly gaining a stranglehold on home field advantage. The 59 yard TD from Brady to Branch with no time left was the lube on the torpedo that rear ended Chicago. If the Patriots can keep this level of play up, they arent going to lose again this year.
Miami shouldnt have beaten the Jets, but did to remain techincally alive one more week. Chad Henne should get one more year, but they Fins have got to open up the offense. Watching Miami offensive football is truly offensive, often akin to watching paint dry. Brian Hartline went to IR this week, so this may mean Davone Bess gets a few more looks opposite Brandon Marshall. Fluffalo won an ugly one this week, but the bigger fantasy story is Steve Johnson hasnt showed up to work in a couple weeks. That better change real quick with WR1 Lee Evans on IR. Dont know who is the #2 now in Fluffylo, so dont ask me. ($5 says even Chan Gailey dont know). Sal. That was a classless move you pulled and you got what you deserved.
AFC North - Took the Ravens into the 5th QTR to put away the Texans (or that long for Houston to screw up) but never the less, the Ravens won on a defensive score in OT. Derrick Mason has been on FIRE the last couple weeks, while Anquan Boldin screwed many an owner with a silent night. Anquan..save your silent nights for non game days. The Ravens, to me, look like a team thats just doing enough to get by, like they will actually play once the post season starts. Pittsburgh didnt do jack on offense and still embarressed Cincinnnai. TP wiped the Bengals ass (out) limping in a pick six, and Carson Palmer again looked lost. TO has finally spoke out, blaming the coaching staff (and I cant blame HIM for saying so, its awful). Pittsburgh, for the moment, looks destined to be in Foxboro for the AFC title game in a few weeks. Cleveland dropped a game I expected them to dominate, losing to Fluffalo 13-6. Colt McCoy looks to be a go this week, and Mangina is hinting he could be the starter (if he isnt your a manidiot). Peyton Hillis keeps on rumbling, and you just see good things in the Browns future.
AFC South - Indianapolis pulled out a desparately needed win over Tennessee last Thursday, moving to 7-6 and trying to keep pace with the Jags. Peyton Manning moved into a first place tie with Dan Marino for career 300 yard games with 63. Given the Titans havent intercepted a pass in 14 quarters, so hold on before you think the slump is really over. Still no word on Joseph Addai. Tennessee is a mess, and barely had Randy Moss on the field (WTF). Moving right along, the Texans hung in against the Ravens, and still found a way to lose when Schaub got pick sixed in OT. The real story in this division was the Jags, who kept a game ahead of Indy with a thrilling 38-31 win over the Oakland Raiders. The Jags RB team of MJD and Rashad Jennings both went over 100 yards (this Jennings guy has been doing good as of late), and MJD clinched it with a late TD run after RB3 Deji Karim had a long kickoff return. The Jags just have to keep on pushing, leading Indy by one with 3 games to go. One is against Indy, but this is the first time in a long time the Jags have been a factor so late in the year.
AFC West - The Chiefs lost Matt Cassel to a bad appendix, turning to Grodie Brodie Croyle, who entered NFL history books by moving to 0-10 as a starter in his career with a 31-0 demolition at the hands of the surging San Diego Chargers. KC is going to end up at home for the playoffs if Cassel cant get back under center. SD is having trouble of its own, with no Gates, mayne no VJax, and an injured Floyd. Still, Phillip Rivers has this team within an appendix of improbably winning the AFC West again. Goign to be interesting to see how it turns out over the next few weeks. I really thought the Raiders had a solid chance of beating the Jags, but it was still a thing of beauty to see the game DMac had. I believe the Raiders are just a few right moves from being players in the division again. Tom Cable was clearly the right man for the job.
Oh...yeah..the Broncos. Probably the only team in the NFL who could manage a 30 point loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Kyle Orton has crashed hard, and this team more than ever lacks identity without Patriot Josh. Orton will be the starter this week, but dont be shocked to see Tim Tebow take a stab at QB if Orton again struggles.
NFC East - Redskins just cant win, botching a PAT which led the Bucs to a 17-16 win. Holder Hunter Smith took full responsibliity and said he should be fired. Effective yesterday, he got his wish. Merry Christmas fella Dallas played a competitive game but came up short against Michael Vick and the Eagles. DeSean Jackson looked like a clown going into the end zone on his 91yd TD catch and run. Real Men get in the end zone ASAP, then celebrate jack ass. Tashard Choice caused a minor stir by asking for Vicks autograph on the field after the game. The Giants beat the Favre-less Vikings in the Relocation Bowl 21-3 on Monday night. New York kept pace headed into this weeks showdown with the Eagles, but at times looked confused offensively. With WR Steve Smith on IR, its a good thing Hakeem Nicks is back and effective.
NFC North - Brett Favre was inactive Monday Night, ending his record 297 game start streak (321ish including playoffs). Tarvaris Jackson did get hurt, but also played so well the Vikings are looking at brining in veteran help this week. The Chicago Bears got New England at home, in the blizzard, with a chance to make a statement. NE was the team making the statement, crushing the Bears 36-7. Chicago still leads the North thanks to the Lions upset of injury plagued Green Bay. The Pack may end up missing the playoffs because of this loss, and are on track to start Matt Flynn this week with Rodgers still suffering from the effects of his second concussion this year. Detroit pulled off a shocker, a feel good win for a team that is trying to dig out of the canyon Matt Millen left them in. I expect the North to produce a one and done division champion.
NFC South - The exciting NFC South race keeps on going. Atlanta had its way with Carolina, bulling to a 31-10 win to move to 11-2 and keep ahead of the Saints, who had their way with St Louis in an equally impressive 31-13 win. One game out at 10-3, its pretty clear all thats left is for the Falcons and Saints to see who is the wildcard and who wins the division (and maybe home field advantage). The Bucs rode a bad PAT snap to a 17-16 win over the Skins to move to 8-5 on the year. There is a big debate about the Bucs 8 wins coming over teams with sub .500 records, and more debate about how the Bucs might keep a team like Green Bay or Chicago out of the playoffs. Oh well. The Jets have done just about the same thing all year and no one is shedding tears for the people they may keep out. Then there are the 1-12 Panthers. No change in status this week: They still suck something awful.
NFC West - Hawks and Rams both lost this week to hold on to the division lead at 6-7, while the 49ers won to keep pace at 5-8. Yes, the likelyhood of a .500 or worse team winning this division AND hosting a playoff game is looking like a reality. Of the 3 teams, I believe the Rams are probably the best team and should go to the playoffs. The Hawks lost Deon Butler for the year to a broken leg, and how become the weakest of the 3 teams in this race. The 49ers probably lost one too many games to factor in, and the Gore loss will come back to haunt them in the last 3 weeks. The Rams have the best coaching, the most talent left, and theyve actually accomplished something this year. Im interested in what the Outlaws think about this particular race.
John Skelton took over at QB for the Arizona Cardinals, didnt turn the ball over, and led his team to a 43-13 demolition of the Denver Broncos. For a week it looks like the Cards gave up on Beanie Wells, and turned all attention to Tim Hightower, who responded with a game like we were more accustomed to during the good times. The Cards will stick with Skelton this week, and I for one think its the right choice. The guy is exceptionally cool under fire for a rookie, and he knows the correct thing to do is target Larry Fitzgerald early and often.
Sarges Week 15 Picks:
San Francisco @ San Diego - San Diego by 10. The Chargers have too much firepower and defense for the 49ers.
Cleveland @ Cincinnati - Cleveland by 7. The Browns have enough run game and defense to keep things interesting, and Carson Palmer will provide the picks.
Washington @ Dallas - Dallas by 9. The Boys have more than enough to slap the Skins.
Houston @ Tennessee - Tennessee by 3. Houston just finds ways to blow games, and that shall be the difference here.
Jacksonville @ Indianapolis - Jacksonville by 4. Ive just got a feeling the Jags run game will be the difference.
Kansas City @ St Louis - KC by 7 with Cassell, STL by 10 without. Its simple. Cassel is the difference.
Buffalo @ Miami - Miami by 13. The Fins defense should be the difference.
Philadelphia @ NY Giants - Philly by 7. Michael Vick shall be the difference in the game. Big time guys step up in big time games.
Detroit @ Tampa Bay - Tampa Bay by 5. The Bucs havent lost to a sub .500 team all year, and they wont stop now, but without McCoy its going to be a much closer game.
Arizona @ Carolina - Arizona by 14. The Panthers best chance was an idiot to be under center at QB for Zona. Skelton wont make too many mistakes.
New Orleans @ Baltimore - New Orleans by 6. The Ravens and Saints will be EPIC! Saints air attack and superior QB play will be the difference.
Atlanta @ Seattle - Atlanta by 17. Same as last week, the Falcons are simply going to power over the Seahawks to a 12th win.
Denver @ Oakland - Oakland by 10. The Raiders are hot, the Broncos are not, and DMac is going to go wild.
NY Jets @ Pittsburgh - Pittsburgh by 8. The Jets offense is offensive right now. The Steelers are going to cause the Sanchize some major pain.
Green Bay @ New England - New England by 12. I dont care who is at QB for the Pack, the Patriots are playing nearly perfect football.
Chicago @ Minnesota - Chicago by 7. I think the Vikes will put up a hell of a fight with whoever is QB, but 8 degree weather is going to favor the Bears.
So those are my random thoughts for the week. Feel free to share yours, and if your are still alive in the post season, good luck this week from the Sarge!
