Saints sign Hartley and Pierre Thomas to long term deals

4 years for Thomas and 5 for Hartley

Thomas struggled with an ankle injury last season and played in just six games. But that came after a 2009 season in which Thomas rushed for a career-high 793 yards and scored eight total touchdowns.
Hartley, like Thomas a hero during the Saints' 2009 Super Bowl title run, was briefly benched last season after several short-range misses, but he ended up making 20 of 25 field-goal attempts.

Unlike many deals, Pierre Thomas' recent four-year, $12 million contract is not back loaded. Analysis: Thomas has a good shot to play out the contract. His biggest cap hit comes this year with a $640,000 base salary and a $2.7 million roster bonus. Thomas' per-season salary would have ranked 24th among running backs last season, which seems just about right considering his unique combination of effectiveness and injuries. So it sounds like the Saints set themselves up for 4 years of good production instead of a 4 year extension that is really only good for a couple of years like many contracts that are around.
