Saints LG Carl Nicks May Be lost to Free Agency

Although he is "relieved" to longer be a candidate for the franchise tag, free agent LG Carl Nicks insists he's still hoping to re-sign with the Saints. Analysis: "Now I kinda know how free agency will go," Nicks said. "Anxiety's still there but I'm a little calmer." Nicks may still be "hoping" to end up back in New Orleans, but the money simply won't be there for a team that committed $56.7 million to RG Jahri Evans two years ago. Nicks has gone on the record as hoping to beat Evans' deal in free agency.

Nicks will be very hard to keep and and it will also make it difficult to keep both WR Marques Colston and WR Robert Meachem. Many of us thought locking up Evans was a good move at that time. Tough business decisions coming up.
 
To me and I'd bet Brees keeping Nicks is the more important move. The Saints are used to play without Colston. We do it every year while he's hurt.
 
Colston can get hurt. Still, he's a core team member.
can the saints sign both, or one, and which one?

by tagging Brees I think the Saints have struck a deal.

Nicks and Brees are with the same agency. I had little faith that a Brees deal would get done wihtout using the tag on him due to the fact that the agency and Nicks did not want to see Brees sign his fat deal and then get Nicks tagged. They would much rather, and benefit greatly by, the Saints tag Brees, then get the blockbuster deal done with him, which we all know will get done. By the time the deal gets done, they are able to get Nicks to FA and get him his monster long term deal as well.

Oh, I don't think he'll be back to NO. How many top FA's who make it to FA return to their own team? I don't think too many at all. The agents for Nicks and Brees played this one perfectly to get big deals for both. One in NO, and one from free agency, and I don't think they care if its NO or not.
