(nfl.com)Chargers coach Norv Turner said in the San Diego Union-Tribune that rookie RB Ryan Mathews, who is going to replace the departed LaDainian Tomlinson, will bring some excitement to the offense. "We did not have a lot of explosive runs the last two years, and that's the quickest way I know of to get teams out of eight-man fronts -- popping a long run," Turner said. "We want to run the ball. You want to be a team that, in the fourth quarter, goes out and runs the ball when they know you're going to run the ball. And we're going to be capable of doing that."
Analysis: We like the way Turner is talking, and Mathews has the chance for a big rookie year. He should get the chance to start while sharing carries with Darren Sproles, who is better used as a change-of-pace RB and a receiver out of the backfield.

(nfl.com)Chargers rookie RB Ryan Mathews made his long-awaited debut in practice recently, and he didn't disappoint. While Mathews admitted to being nervous and underestimating the speed and size of the players at the NFL level, teammates were wowed by his size and how quickly he picked things up. Quarterback Philip Rivers admired Mathews' field vision and became a fan right away, and linebacker Stephen Cooper was blown away by Mathews' cuts and picking up the pass protection. Head coach Norv Turner is equally impressed. "He retained the stuff (from rookie orientation) extremely well," Turner said according to the official team website. "He's very, very natural in what he does. He's got great vision. ... We're going to be a better running team and I think that will help our entire team."

I like this part, better passing via better rushing. The D is supect but should hold up better and be in better situations if the O adds a couple of minutes to each drive.

Chargers Rookie RB Mathews ready for camp.

You can call me Ray.... You can call me Jay.... just don't call me late for training camp!

San Diego Chargers rookie RB Ryan Mathews said he wants to be at training camp as soon as possible and does not want to miss time because of contract issues, reports Nick Canepa, of The San Diego Union-Tribune. "I've talked to my agent; I need to be there. Too many guys hold out for all the wrong reasons and I'm not going to be one of them," Mathews said. Rookies report to the Chargers July 25.

Sounds like a good vibe from this guy.

San Diego Chargers rookie RB Ryan Mathews said the coaching staff threw a lot at him during minicamps, but it was not too overwhelming, reports Nick Canepa, of The San Diego Union-Tribune. "I got more and more comfortable. It's so much faster. They threw a lot at me, but I picked up everything fast," Mathews said. Mathews believes he is big enough to run through tackles and agile enough to make some defenders miss.

cbssports.com,
For those of you who are holding high expectations for rookie RB Ryan Mathews: You're not alone -- Mathews is right there with you. Dismissing the idea of holding out of training camp, the Chargers rookie told the San Diego Union-Tribune that his plans for the career include being "a contributor the way [LaDainian Tomlinson] was a contributor." Though he's focused on team goals before personal ones, Mathews described his style as a mix of Tomlinson and Frank Gore, able to bust through the offensive line yet agile enough to make defenders miss. He also said that the speed of the game hasn't been too big of a problem for him so far. "When I first got here, I didn't know what to expect, but I got more and more comfortable," he said. "It's so much faster. They threw a lot at me, but I picked up everything fast. I don't feel pressure replacing L.T. Big shoes. It's hard to fill those shoes. I'm going to play my game. I knew I should be playing with those guys after I got here. I didn't struggle. It was good. A running back has to be confident; you can't second-guess."
Analysis: So the hype continues to build for Mathews, who seemingly has a hammerlock on being a 20-touch candidate in the Chargers offense this season. Some Fantasy folks believe he'll put up numbers just like Tomlinson did in his heyday, but without a professional track record and two key offensive starters holding out of San Diego (including left tackle Marcus McNeill), those beliefs should be tempered. We like him as a quality No. 2 Fantasy RB, but there's obvious potential for him to wind up performing like a No. 1 option. Expect him to be drafted between 15th overall and 25th overall in all leagues this summer.

I have him as the #6 Rb overall, just ahead of Green with Mendy in a fall with the loss of Colon. One could do much worse in my estimation then grabbing a top WR in late round 1, then following up with the rookie around the corner. I feel that as news keeps pouring out of the camp though that he will begin to move upwards into the corner in many drafts.

I know I am in the minority here, not in the Fantasy Football world as a whole, but I feel this kid is a can't miss top 5 fantasy talent. (as can't miss as we have seen for a long while) He will be in my IBL agenda.

Personally I can't rank a rookie as high as 6 though I agree that he seems to have all the right stuff to be a star in fantasy land.

I am still somewhat leery. My main concern is the passing game. With Vincent out at least three games, maybe more with hold out. Concern of foot health of Gates. Plus not knowing the split he may have with Sproles. Also, didn't they lose an OT to injury or FA move dunno:

Anyway...due to that i have some concerns with ranking him that high

  • -- Lorenzo Neal Mentoring Ryan Mathews --

  • PSX reports San Diego Chargers first-round draft pick RB Ryan Mathews has found a mentor and role model in former Chargers FB Lorenzo Neal. Not only do both share of love for the Chargers, they were stars at Fresno State. "He's become a mentor in a lot of ways, someone to rely on regarding football or the life that surrounds it," said Mathews, the Chargers' top pick. "I think he respects me, my ability and how I work." Mathews, and the rest of the Chargers' rookies, will report to camp on July 25.

Saying and doing evrything right, now he has a great mentor guiding him. :ribbon:

They have a lineman threatening to sit out the year.

  • -- Chargers Lose Leverage with Marcus McNeill --
    Fri Jul 9, 2010 --from FFMastermind.com
  • The San Diego Union-Tribune reports the New York Jets’ signing of OLT D’Brickashaw Ferguson to a six-year, $60 million contract extension gives the Jets a large leg up in pursuit of the Super Bowl and leaves the Chargers a slightly wobblier stance in their ongoing impasse with OLT Marcus McNeill.

rotoworld,
Jets LT D'Brickashaw Ferguson's reported six-year, $60 million extension only guarantees him one year and $5.3225 million, according to Profootballtalk.com's Mike Florio.

The rest of the contract doesn't become guaranteed unless Ferguson plays effectively and without serious injury in 2010. Ferguson's base salaries for 2011 and beyond are guaranteed only for skill -- not for injury. He will be guaranteed $22 million if he avoids injury in 2010 and 2011, but the real contract numbers aren't close to what was initially reported.

cbssports.com,
The San Diego Union-Tribune reports Chargers rookie RB Ryan Mathews would like to sign his rookie contract and be in training camp on time. He does not want to be a hold out. "What makes mine different, I think, is that I need to contribute this year," Mathews said. "Being in camp on time will help me do that." Mathews cited the dates of July 25, when Chargers rookies report, and July 30, when the Chargers hold their first full-squad workout, and said signing "any time in there would be fine."

Analysis: The last rookie running back being counted on to start for the Chargers was Tomlinson in 2001. He didn't sign until Aug. 21 and went on to gain 1,236 yards and score 10 touchdowns in his first season. We believe Mathews is capable of those stats while sharing carries with Darren Sproles. We like Mathews as a high-end No. 2 Fantasy RB, and he's worth drafting as early as Round 2 in all seasonal leagues. In rookie-only drafts, Mathews should be the No. 1 overall selection.
