Chargers GM A.J. Smith told the San Diego Union-Tribune Tuesday that the team is "moving forward" without WR Vincent Jackson, who is holding out for a long-term contract or a trade out of San Diego in a messy fight over money. He could be out until Week 11, when he'd have to return to earn credit for the 2010 season. That would leave QB Philip Rivers without one of his best targets -- Jackson picked up 1,167 of the Chargers' 4,506 passing yards last year (26 percent) and reeled in nine of their 29 touchdowns through the air (31 percent). Malcom Floyd and Antonio Gates would be Rivers' top targets with Jackson out; Legedu Naanee and veteran Josh Reed are among those who would also pitch in.
Analysis: This is a potentially disastrous situation for Rivers, who clearly leaned on Jackson in 2009 (and 2008). If the Chargers are forced to go without Jackson then Rivers' big passing numbers would probably be reduced as the team might look at running the football a little more. It's enough to make you think twice about him as a stud Fantasy QB. We're still considering him a No. 1 option, but if Jackson's holdout slides deep into the preseason, you can expect us to downgrade Rivers to a low-end No. 1/top-end No. 2 Fantasy passer.
