Rivers stock is falling thanks to V Jackson

cbssports.com,
Chargers GM A.J. Smith told the San Diego Union-Tribune Tuesday that the team is "moving forward" without WR Vincent Jackson, who is holding out for a long-term contract or a trade out of San Diego in a messy fight over money. He could be out until Week 11, when he'd have to return to earn credit for the 2010 season. That would leave QB Philip Rivers without one of his best targets -- Jackson picked up 1,167 of the Chargers' 4,506 passing yards last year (26 percent) and reeled in nine of their 29 touchdowns through the air (31 percent). Malcom Floyd and Antonio Gates would be Rivers' top targets with Jackson out; Legedu Naanee and veteran Josh Reed are among those who would also pitch in.

Analysis: This is a potentially disastrous situation for Rivers, who clearly leaned on Jackson in 2009 (and 2008). If the Chargers are forced to go without Jackson then Rivers' big passing numbers would probably be reduced as the team might look at running the football a little more. It's enough to make you think twice about him as a stud Fantasy QB. We're still considering him a No. 1 option, but if Jackson's holdout slides deep into the preseason, you can expect us to downgrade Rivers to a low-end No. 1/top-end No. 2 Fantasy passer.

JoeBryant,
San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers said his approach to the upcoming season has not changed despite the potential holdouts of WR Vincent Jackson and OT Marcus McNeill, according to NFL.com. Rivers plans to continue playing at a high level - and expects those teammates filling in to do the same. 'Every game I've played, Marcus and Vincent have been out there, so certainly it would be different not to have them,' Rivers said. 'There at left tackle, we picked up Tra Thomas over the summer, Brandyn Dombrowski is a young player that's really coming along, got some game experience last year. So whatever it is, they're going to play well.'

OUR VIEW

Rivers continued and commented how if Jackson is out then other players like Legedu Naanee and Buster Davis would have to step up their game. The Chargers also added veteran Josh Reed this offseason to help the depth in their WR corps. Both Davis and Reed have failed to live up to expectations during their pro careers, and that's why we think undrafted rookie Jeremy Williams could end up as the team's slot receiver sometime during the year.

Guess we will see if Rivers has the manhood to get it done with out his #1 WR, this will separate him from the elite QB's if he cant.

This would totally tank some QB's, in my opinion, but Rivers is on of those handful or so Qb's in this league that can adjust and simply move chains. Would he be better off if VJax was playing.......sure, but he'll make do, spreading the ball around. He is a gamer.

I will use Cutler as his polar opposite. Without Marshall last season, granted he was in a new offense, Rivers struggled to get his sea legs. By the end of the season, he was sea worthy, but there were big struggles. I feel Rivers is in a class with Manning, Favre, Brees, Brady, and to a lesser extent Eli, when it comes to finding new targets and moving the chains. I would and could likely include Rodgers to this list, but he hasn't had to do without someone yet. Schaub and Cutler have struggled with an assignment like this.
