-- Andy Reid Could Have Kept Donovan McNabb if... --

ESPN's Matt Mosley reports Philadelphia Eagles HC Andy Reid is one of only three NFL coaches who have ultimate authority when it comes to personnel moves. That means that QB Donovan McNabb would still be with the Eagles if Reid had decided to fight for his quarterback. Reid not only signed off on a trade, but he approved trading McNabb to a team that will have two cracks at the Eagles every season for the foreseeable future. Reid's been an outrageously successful coach since taking over the Eagles in 1999, but all those wins can't overshadow the fact that he's never won a Super Bowl in Philadelphia. Truth be told, Reid and Joe Banner thought they'd have two or three Super Bowl titles by now. But the two men (plus new GM Howie Roseman) have raised the stakes this season. They truly believe they can trade the best quarterback in the history of the franchise while he still has some tread on the tires and not take a step back. If Reid can lead the Eagles deep into the playoffs with QB Kevin Kolb as the starter, it will cement his status as one of the best coaches in the league. But this is an absolute high-wire act from the start. If the Eagles flame out and miss the playoffs, Reid would automatically be on the hot seat heading into 2011.

I think he is a very good Coach. I was and am a McNabb fan, but i don't think Kolb will hold them back at all this year, and he is fresh.

  • BleedingGreenNation.com reports that according to former NFL Scout Dave Razzano, the Philadelphia Eagles improved themselves at quarterback this offseason by trading away QB Donovan McNabb and installing QB Kevin Kolb as their new starter. "I think he’s very similar to QB Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay. Same arm, same competitiveness, same drive. I think he might struggle a little early as he gets used to receivers and all, but I think by the end of the year he could have a big year. He could have 30, 35 touchdowns. I really believe that. With their arsenal of wideouts, I think Kolb is going to be outstanding. I think once the dust settles, and it’s his — his preparation is outstanding, his work ethic, the coaches believe in him. He’s a great kid. He’s got all the intangibles. Again, I think he’s similar to Aaron Rodgers. His whole being is similar to Aaron Rodgers. He can make all the throws. I think he’s going to be outstanding. I don’t think they’ll miss a beat, and the question in Philly will be their defense. They have a young defense, new coordinator, some new people in the secondary. That’s their question mark. Offensively, I don’t think they’ll miss a beat. They may even be more productive."

I concur. I think Kolb could end the year as a Top 5 QB. Sooooo many weapons available to him.

I think Reid is a good coach but he is less than stellar in the GM role.

My main criticism of Reid is that he never can or will fix the glaring problems:

  • The Eagles have lost many games over the last 10 years because of their inability to suceed in short yardage situations. The best short yardage back he has ever had was Duce Staley (you know how long that's been).
  • The Eagles failures in the NFC championship game have been widely considered due to a lack of quality WRs. Only once has he reached out and got a big play WR (T.O.). He lucks up and drafts one finally (D. Jackson) but has now rid himself of the franchise QB.
  • Reid has done a poor job of replacing his great but aging offensive linemen. The O line has gotten worse after each starters retirement.
  • His insistance on a pass first offense at the expense of establishing a competent run game has cost games.
Reid is clearly a good coach but he really has struggled with the GM part of the job. He and Shanny are in the same boat in that regard. As a GM Shanny sucked at getting defensive personnel. Reid sucks at getting key position players that would have made his good teams great.

He could have solved the short yardage thing with more McNabb. I realize injury was the concern, but they needed the scores and McNabb could have delivered more often than not. I agree he could have done better. Is that why they grabbed bell?

Don't think so...I think the real reason why they struggle with short yardage is the overall offensive scheme. It's just like the old run and shoot. It's great in the open field but a real struggle when you have to gain short yardage.

The blocking schemes are just not condusive to the proverbial 3 yds and a cloud of dust. I think Kolb is in for a long year with that regressing offensive line. I see lots of sacks for him this season.

Kolb showed a lot of promise last year when he played but he's only had what, 2 great games in his career? I think he'll be a fine QB but to me it's not a done deal yet.
