RB Jamal Lewis announces retirement

Multiple news outlets have reported Cleveland Browns RB Jamal Lewis has stated he will retire at the end of this season.

Lewis, a 10 year veteran and star RB on the Baltimore Ravens 2001 Super Bowl Championship team, has fallen on tough times.

Lewis stated he "knew what he was getting into" when he joined the Browns, but it appears the toll taken from said times have finally pushed Lewis into walking away from the game.

Lewis has not made a formal announcement, and one has to wonder if this is nothing more than a Brett Favre style ploy to end up a totally free man who can then pop up where he chooses.

I think Lewis could still be a contributor to a contender in a complimentary role, such as the one Fred Taylor was supposed to fill for the New England Patriots.

Do you expect his annoucement to lead to fewer carries for the rest of the season as the Browns attempt to check out their younger guys Sarge?

I agree Sarge, i can see Lewis playing for another team as a non-feature back type role.

Just cant see Lewis walking away like this.

This is all about the state of the Browns and less about where Jamal is at this stage of his career. He is fed up with the lack of committment to fielding a team in Cleveland. He doesn't want to be part of this joke anymore.

Plus, he's just watched his Butterfingers teammate get back to his 2007 self in a Jets uniform. I agree with RC, he wants to play for a team who's more serious and already working with a tuned orchestra of instruments.

If Davis was still healthy? Yes.

Since Davis is out and the O-line sucks...probably not. Harrison has been with the team for 3 years or so...they know what they have there. Had the rookie still been around...there would be a great shot there.

This doesn't really surprise me since there were rumors swirling that Jamal might not even make the team this preseason. He's not the same player he used to be and I think he has hit that running back cliff - he knows it.

Retirement is the right decision here in my opinion. The question now becomes whether James Davis will become the feature back next year or if they'll address the RB position in draft / free agency.

James Davis was set to take over the starting role until he got injured. He is a very talented back, and should be the starter next year.
