Ravens Sign WR Drew Bennett After Tryout.

Is another former Titan the answer for replacing Mason? Drew Bennett has been under-whelming so far in his career, can he turn it around at 30?

James Walker, of ESPN.com, reports Baltimore Ravens WR Drew Bennett could potentially start for the team if WR Derrick Mason stays retired.

The Answer?

Drew Bennett is a reliable receiver if you believe that:

* a career average of 52% (Mason - 64%) of targeted passes caught is reliable,
* a career average of 43.3 yards per game is reliable production, and
* catching a total 80 passes in the last three years is somehow sufficient to replace Derrick Mason's 80 catches in 2008.

Granted the Ravens ran the ball more than any other team in the NFL last year (44% pass to 56% run) and with the additions of veteran Matt Birk at center and draftee RT Michael Oher the Ravens should be able to improve their running game over last year. That being said it is imperative for them to go after a quality WR for Joe Flacco to continue his development. The Ravens receivers with experience are a pretty weak bunch.

I'm not real familiar with the Ravens but I imagine with the departure of CB Chris McAlister, LB Bart Scott, and S Jim Leonhard they don't have defensive trade bait to offer to teams like the Cardinals for Anquan Boldin or the Broncos for Brandon Marshall. With no real off field issues and a long history of proven performance Boldin would be ideal.

I can't believe that coach John Harbaugh would be happy going into the season with these wide receivers. Of course, there is always the possibility that one of their other receivers will step up and shine during training camp.

Obviously if you are expecting more of the same Bennett is not the answer. When was the last time we saw Bennett in a starting role for more than a game or two? It has been a while.

Baltimore should NOT be going for a splash by signing a big name WR - they can get it done quietly with blue collar/2nd or 3rd tier team players - not sure if Bennett will be able to stay on the field long enough to accomplish enough to make us forget Mason but he was definitely a solid signing. One or 2 more and they should be good.

I just named Boldin and Marshall because they have both asked to be traded and I would like to see both of them play for other teams this season. By quality WR I really meant a reliable receiver. Someone who can catch a reasonable amount of targeted passes and not cough up turnovers or lead the league in drops. Blue collar works for me. Boldin is a big name blue collar receiver.
