rotoworld,

Beat writer Steve Reed is "not buying" national speculation that the Panthers will hold an open competition between Matt Moore and Jimmy Clausen

Moore is expected to be the opening-day starter barring a "complete mental meltdown" or a pre-season injury. The length of Moore's leash will be determined by how well he plays early in the season. If he picks up where he left off in December (when he had the second-highest passer rating in the NFL for the final five games), Clausen will be holding a clipboard all season.

makes no sense to me... If they plan on letting Moore go next season, why not go ahead and let your future franchise QB start behind that offensive line they have and win some games and credibility. If they were going to let Moore carry the load, they should have used that 2nd round pick on another position and drafted Pike to carry the clipboard.

Probably because they like alot of teams don't feel he is NFL ready. Why not let Moore play, win SOME games and help keep jobs....and let the rookie learn the game while watching. Then hope beyond hope he is ready to take over when Moore is gone. Or that Pike develops.

(KFFL)Carolina Panthers QB Jimmy Clausen started taking reps with the second-team offense ahead of QB Hunter Cantwell Thursday, May 27.

rotoworld,
According to the Gaston Gazette, rookie quarterback Jimmy Clausen's "stock in Carolina is clearly on the rise."

Clausen still hasn't officially passed Hunter Cantwell to be the Panthers' No. 2 quarterback, but he's reportedly practiced well, is "making all the throws," and "making good decisions." While Matt Moore is the heavy favorite to start Week 1, his leash won't be long with the No. 48 overall pick lurking.

Color me stupid but who the hell is Hunter Cantwell? Anybody with a name like Cant"do"well is destined to fail.

No way Clausen starts before mid-season. HC is VERY loyal to older players. Same argument here to all those we had on Stewart taking DeWill's job.

Yeah you're right. The only way Clausen starts at all next year is if Moore goes down. Last year would seem to bare that out.

rotoworld,
Despite earlier reports to the contrary, rookie Jimmy Clausen is still the Panthers' third-string quarterback.

The Charlotte Observer has cautioned all offseason not to overlook strong-armed Hunter Cantwell, but ESPN's Pat Yasinskas insists "there's no doubt" Clausen will open the season as Matt Moore's top backup. This appears to be a case of veteran loving head coach John Fox making the rookie pay his dues before climbing the depth chart.

rotoworld,
The Charlotte Observer says that Hunter Cantwell's No. 2 QB tag is "not a courtesy title."

There's a little bit of controversy here, as rookie Jimmy Clausen was widely expected to be Matt Moore's backup on opening day. The Observer says the strong-armed Cantwell has earned the trust of coaches and teammates and is "closer than most would believe."

Carolina may have a strength now, that was a weakness in the past. If Moore can be steady, and let the running game, and the deep pass to Steve Smith work.....they will be successful.

Cantwell is getting a ton of praise, as is Claussen. I still think a year just watching would be a very, very good thing for Claussen. Add to that a late round flyer on Pike from Cincy.

Carolina may have the Qb situation well in hand..and can deal some of it away next year to get picks to fill other holes.

JoeBryant,
Carolina Panthers QB Jimmy Clausen could potentially be a holdout, according to ESPN.com. Clausen, a second-round draft pick, will likely seek greater compensation than a typical second rounder because he is a potential franchise quarterback.

OUR VIEW

Clausen should do everything under his power to show up to camp on time. He's currently third on the depth chart behind Matt Moore and Hunter Cantwell. There has been some speculation that he would replace Moore in the starting lineup this year, but we see that as being far fetched. Clausen will likely learn on the bench this year (he has to beat out Cantwell before he can challenge for the starting job) and could get a chance to be the starter in 2011.

rotoworld,
Panthers agreed to terms with second-round QB Jimmy Clausen on a four-year contract worth a max value of $6.3 million.

The deal includes $2.533 million in guarantees. There's been conflicting reports on Clausen out of Carolina all spring. Some have him set to battle Matt Moore for the starting gig, while others think he'll have to beat out Hunter Cantwell just to be the No. 2. We fully expect Moore to be the starter on opening day, but Clausen will be lurking early if there are road bumps.
