PT Cruiser about to receive offer from Saints

FOX 8 New Orleans reports that the Saints will make a long-term contract offer to unsigned restricted free agent Pierre Thomas "as early as tomorrow."

Based on the modest second-round tender they gave him in February, the Saints' offer isn't going to make Thomas one of the NFL's highest paid running backs. Something in the Derrick Ward range (four years, $17M) is probably more realistic. Still, a commitment to Thomas would be a good sign for his fantasy value. He's too often seemed in danger of being replaced.

I know I'll breath a little easier when he's locked up to a longer term deal, especially with Mike Belle gone.

The Saints will lock up unsigned restricted free agent Pierre Thomas with a long-term extension before training camp begins, hears SI's Peter King.

There have been multiple reports about a new deal for Thomas over the last month, making it very likely that a deal is close. The PT cruiser is an explosive playmaker in the screen game and running around the edge. He averaged 13.2 touches a game last season despite knee, hamstring and rib injuries. That number that stands to rise if Thomas can stay at 100 percent health.

rotoworld,

Unsigned restricted free agent Pierre Thomas is not participating in Saints Organized Team Activities.

Fellow unsigned RFA Jammal Brown is also absent, while S Roman Harper and WR Lance Moore are working out, probably on injury waivers. The Saints and Thomas are thought to be in long-term contract negotiations. We doubt the same can be said for Brown, who is coming off a lost year due to injury.

Pierre is an average talent that could be easily replaced . When the defense fears the pass it makes the running game look good.

Who ever starts at RB for the Saints is a good fantasy bet.

Restricted free agent Pierre Thomas is reportedly seeking a contract in the neighborhood of Steven Jackson's six-year, $44.8 million deal.

That would explain the hold up on an extension. Thomas is one of our favorite players, but he hasn't proven able to shoulder a full load over 16 games -- much less serve as the offensive focal point. Per ESPN's Len Pasquarelli, negotiations between Thomas and the Saints have now broken down. If he doesn't want to play on a one-year deal, he'd better lower his expectations.

The Cruiser must be on drugs. Fat chance he gets that kind of deal.

Saints beat writer Jeff Duncan disputes an ESPN report that contract talks between the team and unsigned restricted free agent Pierre Thomas had broken down.

"Negotiations (are) ongoing," wrote Duncan on Twitter Wednesday. "It'll get done." ESPN had reported that Thomas wants Steven Jackson money. Thomas won't get that much, but he remains a priority re-signing for the Saints.

(nfl.com)Saints RB Pierre Thomas was not at Friday morning's minicamp practice because of a contract dispute. "There's no update, and I wouldn't say it caught us off-guard because we didn't have (Thomas) in the last OTA," coach Sean Payton said. Thomas, a restricted free agent, is looking for a long-term contract.

Unsigned restricted free agents Pierre Thomas and Jammal Brown failed to show for the start of Saints mandatory minicamp on Friday.

Neither player will face fines as they're both without contracts. Thomas' negotiations are ongoing, so he doesn't want to risk an injury before finalizing a long-term deal. Brown, who isn't known to be engaged in extension talks, has yet to practice all offseason.

According to NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora, unsigned restricted free agent Pierre Thomas isn't close to getting a contract extension

"Nothing's really evolved or escalated to this point," says LaCanfora. The Saints threw out an offer a couple of months ago, and they've been reluctant to go higher. Though beat writer Jeff Duncan has stated that the deal will "get done," LaCanfora maintains that nothing is imminent.

AS RC reported elsewhere:

rotoworld,
Citing an NFL source, the New Orleans-Times Picayune reports the Saints' opening offer to restricted free agent Pierre Thomas was a four-year, $11 million deal.

Thomas' agent offered a counter-proposal, but the Saints are dragging their heels, causing talks to stall. It's hard not to side with Thomas on this one. He's severely outplayed Reggie Bush the past two seasons, yet he's made peanuts by NFL standards. Signals out of New Orleans suggest the team has placed a role-player monetary value on Thomas while at the same time planning to enter the 2010 season with him as the clear-cut feature back.

rotoworld,
The agent for Pierre Thomas confirmed an NFL Network report that he's not close to a long-term deal with the Saints.

The Saints have only made one offer. It wouldn't be a surprise if they were low-balling Thomas considering their RFA tender offer was only at the second-round level. The agent did deny that he's seeking "Steven Jackson money" at $8 million per year, but the sides remain far apart.

rotoworld,
The Saints reportedly plan to exercise their right to reduce restricted free agent Pierre Thomas' tender if he doesn't sign by June 15.

Here we go again. Another team is taking a hard-line stance against a player who has done and said all of the right things while severely outplaying his contract. Thomas would stand to lose $1.1 million if he doesn't sign on the dotted line in the next five days.

Football may not be as much fun this year if the Saints, Chargers, and Titans among others do not get some key players back where they should be.
