Portis Could Carry Most of the Load, But... --
Fri Jul 2, 2010 --from FFMastermind.com
CSNWashington.com reports the odd thing about the Redskins running game is that RB Clinton Portis could be the top running back and not necessarily start games. OC Kyle Shanahan stated recently that Portis is the third-down back. That could mean more action for RB Larry Johnson on first and second downs with Portis then coming in for long-yardage situations

Potentially big fantasy danger here. With Running Back By Commites becoming more and more prevalent it's getting harder and harder to determine who is getting the load. It is obviously hard to predict now before training camp begins but it also getting harder to determine when the season is underway. Years ago being named the starter in a game also meant getting the majority of the work for the most part. But in RBBC today where all the components (RBs) are capable and effective starting the game has not become a great predictor for production in that game. Getting named the starter sometimes is more of an honorary distinction. You get to run through the tunnel with the starters with your name being announced but after a couple of carries you go sit down while while someone else piles up the stats and fantasy owners end up throwing stuff at their TV. I'm sure all of you can name times it has happened to you.

it's shanny.....stay the hell away......don't forget about Parker as well.....

Well, I keep reading that Parker is done and will be cut. Shanny Jr actually said they didn't need a dedicated 3rd down back because Portis was fine in that role. He did not say that Portis was only the 3rd down back however, just that they didn't need one.

I see a nice season for Portis especially how cheap you can get him.

I admit I don't know their ADPs but I agree that they both can be very useful producers this season but it may be a matter of when. When all the components of a RBBC work well there is no reason for a coach to use any RB that has a minor injury tweek. So either one of the RBs can have a 2-3 week stretch where their production is studly. You just need to have enough RB depth to cover you when it the other guys turn.

IMO, Johnson is done too, so I think Portis get the majority of the carries unless they trade for Lynch, which wouldn't be a bad idea. I think Portis is undervalued at this point........

Good point, And I am not that big an LJ fan as he may have already left it all on the field. Portis was branded several years ago as injury- prone. Yet in reality his production was very good and always above the level at which he was drafted, a very good value for the last couple of years. This year this may prove to be true again as the LJ speculation is driving Portis's perceived value even lower. It is interesting that everybody says LT2 has lost a step and has had the wheels run off of him, but they aren't really saying the same thing about LJ. I would have the same concerns about LJ and maybe a bit more so than LT2.
