No interest in Daniels by other teams shows a total lack of respect for his abilities, or a total show of respect for AJ's. Seems some team would have at least forced the Texans hand a little.

Can't see why a team wouldn't be out there going after this guy. One of the top tight ends in the league in terms of ability, just hasn't been in the greatest of situations.

Texans would be foolish to not lock this guy up long term.

He is a restricted free agent which means the Texans still own his rights. No other team can negotiate with him unless they agree to the Texans compensation.

The compensation is set by the NFL, but I am not sure what the 2009 compensation is.

Here is 2008

  • $2.562 Million - 1st and 3rd round pick
  • $2.017 Million - 1st round pick
  • $1.417 Million - 2nd round pick
  • $927,000 - Draft pick equal to players original draft round, but no higher than a 2nd round pick.

Sorry I didn't make that clear. I know the league sets it but it goes to the Texans if you want Owens.

My bad!

No worries, I actually wasn't sure how this was set and had to go look it up for myself.

Anybody got the 2009 numbers? (too lazy to look any longer myself :) )

the surprise should enlighten the TE situation after Gonzo, Gates and Witten.

btw, anyone think Gonzo is in trouble playing for Southern?

As long as The Tuna and his disciples are in the league, big and fast every down dudes are coveted and roll players just aren't worth it.

besides, any white boy can catch

Texans Officially Re-Sign Owen Daniels --
Sun Jun 14, 2009 --from FFMastermind.com
The Houston Chronicle reports Pro Bowl TE Owen Daniels has signed his one-year, $2.79-million tender with the Texans, but his agents, Alan Herman and David Butz, will continue negotiations on a multiyear contract they hope will make him one of the NFL's highest-paid players at his position. Daniels, a third-year restricted free agent who caught a career-high 70 passes for 862 yards last season, skipped the last week of organized team activities because he's been unhappy that a new deal hasn't been reached. Those familiar with the negotiations said the Texans made a new offer last week that would rank Daniels second among the league's highest-paid tight ends. Figures were not available.
