Over the Hill: Smith new 49ers QB

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Alex Smith is the San Francisco 49ers' new starting quarterback.

Coach Mike Singletary made the announcement Monday after sitting down with Shaun Hill, who was benched at halftime of the Niners' 24-21 loss at Houston on Sunday. Smith, who hadn't played in nearly two years, completed his first six passes and finished 15-of-22 for 206 yards and three touchdown passes to tight end Vernon Davis -- and he nearly led the 49ers back from a 21-0 deficit.

Smith, the No. 1 overall draft pick out of Utah in 2005, missed last season after reinjuring his surgically repaired throwing shoulder three days before the season opener.

Singletary said he doesn't plan to change quarterbacks every week, saying this is not a "flavor of the month" situation.

His performance Sunday was 23-29 points in most formats. I think hell crash to earth, but you have to like the chemistry he had with Davis.

I hope to hell he keeps playing like that, but I have my doubts. We shall see............

That said, Crabtree made some nice catches. Kid has serious hands. Davis is finally becoming the player they thought they were getting 4 years ago. Throw in Morgan and Gore, and Smith has some nice targets if he has indeed turned the corner..........

From a fantasy perspective I have to wish he does good as he is my Roethlisberger bye week replacement in one league. I had Hill on my roster for that job. Of course, in the usual theme of fantasy football mayhem he loses his job the week before I need him. So, I spent a couple of days holding my breath to see if I had gotten Alex Smith in the Waiver Wire Lotto. I did get him and am hoping he can put together a decent effort in Bens' absence.
