Niners Trade QB Shaun Hill To The Lions

With starter Alex Smith and David Carr already in the stable, the San Francisco 49ers traded quarterback Shaun Hill to the Detroit Lions on Sunday for a seventh-round draft pick in 2011.

Hill will compete with Drew Stanton for back up duties behind last years rookie QB starter Mathew Stafford. It looks like another nice move by The Lions. Hill has a winning record in the NFL and while he doesn't have big time physical tools he manages a game well and performs above his raw talent level. He could be a nice stopgap for a couple of years as a backup while Stanton develops more.

No, but he is an FA.

This is a great depth move. Hill was a back up in Minny when Linehan was OC there. So he knows Linehan's system, and allows for a veteran back up for Stafford that is good at coming in and playing cold off the bench.

I agree...Detroit seems to have woken up and is making some great moves.

I was surprised at this....because Hill was 10-6 as a starter for the Niners...and Alex Smith was not super impressive last season

I think the Niners just did it to remove any hint of a QB controversy between Smith and Hill. Great deal for the Lions and it was a very small pick and not even in this years upcoming draft for a solid backup.

So do the Niners draft a young stud then?

I don't think they really will take a big shot at it this draft. They have the Alex Smith gets his shot this year plan in effect. You have Carr/Davis next year if Smith totally tubes. Will they watch QB movement up and down the draft boards a little closer, you bet. But unless a QB they really like drops like a rock and becomes a great later value I don't think they will take a big shot at QB this year.

Carr was a nice pick up for SF and Hill to Detroit is a solid move. I am surprised that people are still holding out hope for Stanton though.
