Niners starting to lean towards RB?

Coach Mike Singletary suggested Thursday that the 49ers could target a running back in this year's draft. "We can't count on Gore forever," said Singletary, adding that lightening his workhorse's load could help extend his career. The Niners are believed to be interested in a change-of-pace/returner as a complement, such as Clemson's C.J. Spiller or Ole Miss' Dexter McCluster.

Not sure dexter is what I would call a rb. And Spiller is more than a change of pace, he's a star. Interesting.

Are they worried about Coffee?

Coffee had a spectacular preseason and started out well. But didn't really do well when he had to replace the injured Gore in the early season. In the later part of the season he got a concussion and production was off. So far, some signs of great ability but it hasn't translated into real production on the field yet.

improving their oline would benefit the production of the rb's and qb . . . sounds like coach speak to me and a move to force more teams to want to move up . . . ;)

I agree, grabbing some O line talent would certainly help. Like you said there is a lot of coachspeak going on this time of year. A lot of it is posturing, if not outright baloney.

I have to agree, we really need some O Line talent that will allow Coffee to actually get something going.

No way in hell they take a RB with either of their first rounders. If the right guy (Best) is still on the board in round 2, then they go RB.

McCluster is a RB. Or at least he was during his entire college career. If he's entering this draft as a WR then he's basically changing positions. He'd be a great get for the Niners if he's there in the 3rd.

Careful with that, people used to say the same thing about Reggie Bush. I'll believe when I see production out of him.
One, I never bought into the Bush hype, called him what he was from the start.

Two, Spiller is a much better all around RB in terms of pro projection than Bush IMO.

And you can wait till you see the production, by that time you will be watching him on someone else's roster......projection not reaction is what wins. Try being a step ahead and not a step behind ;)

Spiller isn't a between-the-tackles guy in the NFL. Sorry, but he's just not. He's too small to be a bruiser and his speed isn't within shouting distance of Chris Johnson's. He's going to be a role player, maybe an exceptional one, but in all honesty I think Jahvid Best and LaGarrette Blount are going to end up being better NFL running backs.

Best isn't really all that different than Spiller and was the consensus #1 ranked pro prospect at RB until he started getting dinged up and concussed.
Ryan Mathews has been my favorite legit feature-type RB prospect in this draft for several weeks now and the Niners could possibly get him in the 2nd, depending on how his stock trends between now and late-April. I'm with you, DD on Blount because if that ugly incident was just a one-time hiccup, he'll be a steal anytime after round 2. Same can be said about Gerhardt and he wouldn't have very far to move his belongings.. :)

Best is a tad more stacked than Spiller, although the concussions are worrying. I imagine whatever team he goes to will be sure to fit him with the best possible helmet to prevent further damage.

Hmmm.... 49ers beat reporter Matt Maiocco expects the team to show interest in free agent Darren Sproles when the market opens on March 5. Acquiring Sproles would take San Francisco out of the mix for Clemson RB C.J. Spiller with one of its first-round picks, and allow the 49ers to draft more for need. The Niners are very interested in upgrading their return units. Sproles would also provide a speedy change of pace for Frank Gore.

Sproles sudden availability could really become interesting for several teams.

This would be a great move depending on the price. Ideally, I would love to get Best in the 2nd round, but this move would allow them to grab another O-Lineman, an edge rusher or DB in the 2nd.

3 years at 10 million and it's a done deal..............
