NFL rule changes approved

So far:
1) updated ruling on what is a catch
2) off- field officials can mandate an ejection to on-field officials - so in Rob Gronkowski's case NFL could have ejected him for the out of bounds hit he did as an ex.
3) made permanent that kick offs and Punts will start at the 25 yard line if touched back or out of end zone.
4) Bylaw change - teams can trade a player on IR

Uh oh, they are now reviewing a targeting rule for NFL like they have in college.......

Oh my....NFL has passed a rule on a penalty for lowering your head to make contact on any collision. So this can be penalized for offense or defense, and it can be also reason for ejection....

Also they have tabled the discussion on the McDaniel rule, for future consideration - this was to allow teams to sign coaches while still in the playoffs.

Another rule change that is beneficial. Now after a team scores a game-winning touchdown at the end of the game that will no longer force the teams to kick a PAT.


It'll save a lot of headaches but you're still going to have people complaining that they didn't get a shot to block the extra point and potentially force overtime or win the game on their own if they lose by the margin that you get for a blocked field goal return.

So couple of things..... Brought out on ESPN radio this morning, with the new rule in place for lowering the head...how is this different than Spearing, which has been on the rule books for quite a while?

Also, the league has approved a rule that closes the loop hole for OT - that being what is a possession - here is the explanation from PFT:

Most fans probably had no idea that this could ever become an issue, but when the NFL tweaked its overtime rules, it didn’t clarify what, exactly, constituted a possession.

Consider this scenario: Team A receives the overtime kickoff, marches down the field and kicks a field goal. On its ensuing possession, Team B throws an interception. But the player on Team A fumbles the ball, and a player on Team B scoops it up and runs for a touchdown. Who wins the game?

Under the old rule, Team A wins the game, because Team B’s possession ended the moment the interception was thrown. But that just feels wrong: How can you lose a game when the game ends with you running into the end zone for a touchdown?

Now the NFL has changed the rule. Under the new rule, Team B will win the game: Every play will be officiated to its finish, and if a team re-takes possession and scores a touchdown on that play, that team will win.

To put it another way: If you score a touchdown in overtime, you win. Always.

ending the game mid play makes no sense at all. I assume this is a clarification and not how they would have actually ruled it. The smarter players on team A just drop to the ground after the pick to not risk the fumble scenario. also, if team A got the FG and then got the Pick 6 - would nthey then win the game by 9? I assume so.

the point is, as the rule was written.... if Team A scores FG, then Team B throws interception or fumble to Team A - game is over AT THAT POINT. So team A wins, even though end of play was Team B got ball back and scored. That is how it was written.

The clarification now is - you let full play finish, before final decision is made. Much fairer that way.

Edit to add - as the rule WAS written, the minute Team B lost ball, that ends the game.
