Mountain West invites two schools

The Mountain West conference today extended formal membership offers to Fresno State and Nevada of the WAC. If the MWC is able to retain independance minded BYU this would be a nice add to go along with Boise State. This would stall the Mountain West attempt at gaining an automatic BCS birth, a risk the conference appears willing to take. The major hold up is the $5 million buyout the cash strapped athletic departments of both schools would have to pay the WAC, an agreement all league schools signed this summer as penalty for leaving prior to 2015. Upon acceptance this would likely signal the death of the Western Athletic Conference.

Updating this story, both schools have accepted and will join the MWC. Nevada also stated they agreed to the buy out clause but DID NOT sign the contract. WAC commissioner Karl Benson has scheduled a news conference for later today to address the issue. The WAC will be left with only 6 football schools.
