Jaguars sources tell CBSSports.com's Pete Prisco that Maurice Jones-Drew "isn't nearly as explosive as he used to be."
While it's not a major concern for Jones-Drew's 2012 fantasy value, it's another clue as to why the Jaguars won't consider extending his contract. According to Pro Football Focus, Jones-Drew led the NFL in yards after contact and was fourth in forced missed tackles last season. Even if he's no longer the homerun threat he was early in his career, Jones-Drew is still highly effective in gaining yards after contact. Source: CBSSports.com

Duh! After the pounding he's taken in Florida who could be the same? Not me, I feel every day of my advanced age. Moving on now...

Poor guy. Peterson's knee and Chris Johnson's lack of fire has really screwed over guys like MJD and Forte. GMs are looking for a little more ROI.

I think this is another Forte "We aren't gonna give you a ton of $$" statement from team management. What will he be when his contract expires, 28/29 ?? 5'7" 208 lbs is a load though

From a Fantasy perspective I think this is a sell high season for him if you have him. I see that several reliable sites have him ranked top 3/5 but, Over the last 3 seasons he has had 954 carries and 1084 touches and is being projected for another 300/350 again this year.

Thanks for bringing this up. I have him in a large keeper league and might have missed this. I'll be moving him for some pretty good value early this season

I look for MJD to have another top 5 performance next year. Just think if people had even the littlest bit of fear of a Jaguars QB. What would MJD be able to do then. Fantasy wise I would likely take him in the late 1st rd next season if i had the chance. Last year I had pick 5 and Ray Rice was my 1st at 5 and MJD was my second at #15. Nobody on my team was more consistent than him. If the jags could have only scored..... As for his NFL season it should be similar to last depending on how the rest of the offense works out.

You picked up MJD with a 15, wow. You're right, of course, in that a real threat under center would help him a lot.

JT, RBs with multiple seasons over 300 touches/season are a very high risk injury wise. Have seen several articles detailing instances over the years. It is as big a risk or more than the over 30 years old

If he does not hold out, MJD will be a top 5 rb. I am not sure he won't hold out though.

Looking at what is happening to Forte...and Rice. I think he is trying to protect for the future.

I see alot of folks drafting Rbs early...that could face some major disappointment.

agree with jumping off too soon rather than too late. I think he decline is imminent and I don't want to be the one holding the ball.

Hmmm, that would be me wouldn't it? At least in one league. I put a stake in his heart last year, and he proved me wrong, I hope he does it again this year.

hmmmm.....

The Jacksonville Jaguars feel RB Maurice Jones-Drew isn't nearly as explosive as he used to be, according to team sources, and that is why in part the team will not renegotiate his current deal. Jones-Drew also has a lot of mileage on his smallish frame.

This trend of teams floating negative information about running backs to undercut their public bargaining position is disturbing. It's beginning to seem like teams will just use up running backs while they are playing under their cheap rookie contracts, and then move on to younger backs when it is time to reward the veterans for their success.

Is it disturbing or just good business? To me its good business at a position that is becoming a disposable position. It is also why you will see more and more talented kids choosing to play WR as a youngster than rb.

Note to NCAA RB's: Learn to pass protect, catch the ball and do them both well.

Sincerely, LaGarrette Blount, Brandon Jacobs, and Michael Turner

Hmmmm.....one of those just doesn't belong.....I think Turner has done quite well with the skill set he has in the NFL. 3 of the last 4 years he has carried the ball over 300 times. 3 of the last 4 years he has ran for at least 1340 yds. for 4 straight years has has scored at least 10 TD's.

I think you could have used a better person to make that argument than Michael Turner. Kid has been a workhorse since landing in the ATL.

His best years were prior to coaches embracing (building their team around) the rule changes that aided the passing game. There's a reason he's one of the last workhorse backs. He might deserve better consideration than Wes's particular context, but I understand it.

So when did this shift occur??? He's been a beast for the last 4 years. His "Best" years have been 3 of the last 4 years....Wes's point was there is no room in today's NFL for backs with limited skill set's.....yet used Turner as an example despite him being one of the most productive backs in the league the last 4 seasons......not a great name to use to make your point.
