Matthew Stafford working toward Week 1 Start

Some tidbits to update the Outlaws on the status of Matt Stafford:

According to veteran LB Julian Peterson, Stafford is "way ahead of the curve" as far as rookies go. Stafford has already picked up the playbook and shown veteran savvy and confidence in practices, which is no surprise considering his uncanny memory and high IQ. He continues to split first-team reps 50-50 with Daunte Culpepper.

Beat writer Tom Kowalski is certain Matthew Stafford will beat out Daunte Culpepper for the Lions' starting QB job. Kowalski has been in Stafford's camp all along, even though the two quarterbacks are splitting reps evenly. He says Culpepper has done nothing wrong but that Stafford has been extremely impressive. The Lions aren't saying anything publicly about the competition, so we'll take Kowalski's word on it for now.

MLive.com reports Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said he has been impressed with how QB Matthew Stafford has been able to understand things without having a lot of repetition. 'I don't feel like I'm coaching or talking to a rookie when we work with him. That's not just talking and saying 'That's how it is because he's a No. 1 pick.' He has a very natural feel for the game and understands concepts, he can translate things he's done before to what he's doing now without a lot of repetition. He can go right to it and make that decision. He's pretty impressive that way,' Linehan said. Expect Stafford to be starting from day one unless he has a complete meltdown.

Daunte Culpepper is still going to start the 1st preseason game, but it will be interesting to see how the reps get split up.

No offense meant to Cooley here but after the total meltdown the Lions had last year, of course Stafford looks good. Hell Leinart could come in and look good compared to anything Detroit had as a QB last year.

DC will definitly start in preseason but i think when the games count, it will be Stafford leading the team.

No offense taken.

Can't really hold last year against Culpepper. Detroit was in no position to lose Kitna and bringing him in and immediately expecting Daunte to start and salvage the season I do not think was realistic. Having been out of football for a period I think Cully has done all that was expected of him.

From everything I've read both have looked good. If Matty is starting that early it will be because the new front line has come together better than even I have anticipated. Otherwise, I see him on the sidelines for a few weeks - depends on how things develop once the season starts that will have the most influence on that decision.

Last year was definitly not Culpeppers fault. For coming in and being thrown into the pit on a few days notice and to play the way he did the rest of the year, You have to give him kudos for how he did perform.

It doesn't matter who starts really, but i really do think Stafford will be starting when the season starts w/ DC playing backup.

And i guarantee, the Lions will quadruple their win total from last year.

They will at least be .500 regardless who is starting at the QB postion. In that division this should almost be good enough to contend for the championship.

GB: I am a fan of Aaron but Grant needs to rebound to even out the offense. D is transitioning and I'm hoping will make them beatable for 1 of the 2 meetings (I'm thinking the 1st meeting is Detroit's best opportunity)

Chi: New sheriff in town but none of the WR's have won me over even though I did go with Bennett in one of my leagues. I think their D is starting to age/come apart and will not be as dominant as it has been.

Min: No QB has stepped up yet but the suspensions on the line make this a potential early season victim (have not recently checked their schedule though and do not remember when Det gets their 1st shot at them)

That division will mirror the nfc west. It will go down for 1st to the last 2/3 weeks and 2nd will be decided in week 17.

Okay, I have to admit it...I don't understand this thinking.

Chicago had ONE main issue...it was at Qb. They have a solid Rb core, improved O-line...and a solid defense. Key I agree is Wr..but a good Qb can help so-so Wrs. Add in Olsen and Clark...and you got Tenn. north. Don't underestimate this team.

Minnesota. All they did was get to the playoffs, and were just a few plays away from the championship game. Nothing has changed...except some help at Qb. Again, I don't see a major drop here. No reason for it.

GreenBay. Top scoring team with four ( yes count them ) four top recievers, a solid Qb, an up and coming Te and Grant who will only be better with O-line help. Now they have converted the defense to take advantage of the one true solid they had...lbs. I don't think it will be a top 10 defense...but if it holds the other team more than last year.....the record will be greatly improved.

Detroit. Much improved in my opinion. Added O-line help, got some defense help. But this division and this conf. is not a cake walk. I think 0.500 is the absolute best it can do. I would think 6-10 is much more likely. They will win one or two they shouldn't, but lose 3-4 they shouldn't either. Young teams make mistakes...but that is okay as long as they learn.

Chicago: The QB was merely the focal point of the disappointment. I did not attack their running game but the WR's are unproved and less than the ideal regardless of who is tossing the rock. I think the D will disappoint many this year.

Minnesota: Well someone had to get to the playoffs last year from this division so I would not use that as a benchmark for why the Vike's will return. I have nothing against Sage but I do not believe he is the answer at QB and I think the D has changed with the suspensions still looming overhead and could play havoc when the old men come back.

Green Bay: Will the passing be as successful if Grant does not improve? I would not count on it. The key to their offense being productive is getting more out of their RB's and I am not sure that is going to happen. The D is in transition and I did not say it would collapse but no D in this division is anything to write home about this season.

Detroit: If Matty is starting week 1 I believe it will be a great indicator that the line is much improved and will be able to keep him upright. Regardless of who is at QB CJ and Petti will help keep D's off of the RB. The D is rebuilt and granted a definite work in progress but the pieces (if healthy) are there. Smith should be an upgrade over the hard working DeVries, Grady and some young players up front, one if not the best LB corps in the division and a defensive backfield that will feed off of the rookies agressiveness and spirit. This D will surprise (not a high standard considering how low the expectations are).
