• ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports free-agent WR Matt Jones, a free agent receiver who was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars in March, has been notified he will not be suspended as the result of his violation of a court-mandated drug program, his agent said. Jones was informed by the NFL last week that he will be fined $50,000 but not suspended. Even then, the NFL Players Association has convinced Jones to appeal the fine, according to Dave Butz, his agent. While Jones is "eager to turn the page," the agent explained why he is appealing the $50,000 fine, payable if he is employed again by a team. "The [players] union believes the league has no right to fine Matt any money because the substance abuse policy won't allow it," Butz said. "In the letter the league sent, it seemed to cite personal conduct but the union believes because it involved alcohol, it should have kicked back to the substance abuse policy without penalty."

This (Matt Jones) could be extremely relevant, especially if a team such as Dallas signs him in time to get training camp reps. If he lands in a favorable spot he could assume #2 WR duties.

Wasn't he the one having a beer on the golf course? If so it is about as minor a violation you can get - if the fine holds that is one expensive can/bottle of beer - hope it was better than your typical beverage.

Jones still has great potential but he has underperformed so far in the league - Jax invested enough time and effort, maybe a change of scenery will provide a wake up call for him so he can benefit from this opportunity. At this point I think he would lock up the #2 in Dallas if that is his next destination.

Normal for us law abiding (uncaught) folk. But for the caught fold on probation that is about as minor a violation you can get.

I guess when you're enrolled in a substance abuse program you're not supposed to drink alcohol. At least not in public when everyone and their brother has a camera phone or blackberry.

Last season before he did his suspension, he was the only guy who could catch the ball. The last 4 games without him was like watching hot potato, nobody could catch anymore. If Matt gets his off antics together, he will make some team a solid #2 WR. I agree with his time is up in Jax, a change of scenary will do him good.
