Marion Barber out 1-2 weeks

The Cowboys signed a practice squad player and this report is coming from a guy that covers the Boys daily so it is pretty strong for a story. The move would make sense against the Panthers weak rush defense. Bump up Felix Jones as a legit RB1 this week with Tashard Choice in play for a flex if you're desperate or want to gamble on Jones getting nicked up.

did you see how fast Barber came up lame on that run? I think the Cowboys are seriously playing this injury down as much as possible. If Barber comes back in this two week window and is anywhere near full speed, I will be shocked.

:sob: I needed him this week

(RotoWire) Monday's MRI confirmed that Barber has nothing worse than a strained quadriceps, but head coach Wade Phillips wouldn't commit to Barber playing in Week 3, the Dallas Morning News reports. Analysis: "We'll have to wait and see on that," Phillips said Monday afternoon. The fact that the Cowboys play on Monday night this week does give Barber an extra day to heal, but even if he plays chances are Dallas is going to limit the amount of work he gets.

(TheHuddle) ESPN.com reports Dallas Cowboys RB Marion Barber III (quadriceps) has a '50-50' chance to play in the team's Week 3 game, according to a league source. The Cowboys will see how Barber's strained quadriceps responds to treatment over the next few days and then make a decision. Analysis: If you can pick up Tashard Choice in your league, go ahead and do it just in case Barber can't play. Choice would be a good start against Carolina in Week 3

This is Choice's chance to put his stamp on things. Curious if he gets alot or little carries if Barber is out.

Interesting to see how this works out.

Tashard Choice is was being exclusively used as the Cowboys' 3rd down back, and it was working pretty well.

The annoying thing is all of these running backs have shown signs of poor conditioning to start the season. With these three running backs, even poor conditioning shouldn't be an issue because they could easily divide the time up equally if needed in the heat this team was playing in.

Assuming Barber isn't going to play (and I doubt he will), here is what I am expecting...

Felix Jones will be given the rock, and the only thing that will get it taken out of his hands on early downs, and an occasional series for rest, is an unexpected inability to produce.

here is what I fear....

Marion Barber doesn't want to lose his starting job. If you don't believe that, look how hard he was running, and look at game tape from last year when he felt comfortable to have the job. I fear him talking his way into the lineup, and being completely ineffective (killing key drives early in the game)

Unfortunately, I believe this is a bigger problem than intially reported...Dallas seems pretty mum on the severity of the strain.

A quad strain is still a tear in the muscle. We obviously won't know how bad it is until the Cowboys come clean but with the way Barber runs and the violent cuts he makes, I doubt he'll be 100% by 2 weeks. It's a injury that lingers and the only possible way it heals is if he stays off it.

Sounds to me like the same injury SJAX had last year. He tried to play the 2nd week after the injury and took himself out of the Arizona game after just 7 carries because he couldn't make his cuts. He didn't play another down until 4 weeks after.

Time for Felix owners to cash in that lotto ticket...should be big if he can stay healthy.

With the RB depth the Cowboys have, I doubt he gets rushed back. We'll see...

Exactly, as stated above.

Competitive advantage is the only reason I could see this being played down. Anybody that seen this guy drop has to feel this is a serious injury. I hope it isn't, but that just looked bad.

I did which is why I jumped on the story in the speculative phase. I don't see him coming back and being effective and with two more than capable backs I don't see the Boys being in a position to rush him back, either. He sits this week and maybe next.

Choice has been tagged as the 3rd down back. This is his role in the offense, with Felix digging into Marion's playing time.

They like Choice as the 3rd down back because he can catch out of the backfield, and be a punisher, just like Marion Barber was when he was in his best role (3rd down back).

The common conception is to have a "scat back" in on third down. It doesn't have to be that way. The Cowboys' offense worked well with Barber back there on 3rd down, and he performed best in that position. Choice works very similar to Barber in regards to his strong running, and I think Dallas is more prone to keeping him where it looks like he is the most successful.

I tell ya, as an Eagles fan I hope Dallas NEVER wises up.

They could absolutely dominate a game if the coach got his head out of his ass and use F.Jones in the first half, with Choice as change of pace, and save Barber for the second half to just bludgeon tired defenses. IF they did this...and did it consistantly...and not panic and put the game in Romo's hands...they would be very, very hard to beat.

However, as an Eagle's fan if my head coach would get his head out of his ass and RUN Westbrook and McCoy and FB more....we also would be very hard to beat.

Guess the NFC East is just full of Butt heads...... ;)

Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips said Tuesday that RB Marion Barber is on the mend from a strained quad but is still having some swelling issues. Phillips said the initial prognosis on Barber's injury was that it was a 10-day to two-week recovery, so he may or may not be ready to play against the Broncos in Week 4. Barber has been receiving treatment daily on the quad.

Jerry Jones is saying Barber should be ready for Sunday's against the Broncos. Key here being should.
