Man vs. Magazine: QB's

I picked up a copy of NFL.com's 2009 Fantasy Football Preview publication a couple weeks ago, and let me first say it is very well put together with plenty of high-quality color photos and useful articles. It was also one of the first releases for the upcoming FF season. However, I found fault with more than a handful of the ratings and statistical projections. In this one week mini-series, I'll take them to task with my interpretation of 2 players at each position that I believe to be ranked too high or too low, along with my own personal projections. Don't be shy with the feedback, gang!
:sunshine:

QB's:
Matt Ryan, ATL - #8 - Projected 3,950 Yds/25 TD's (too high)
-I'm sorry Falcon fans, but I cannot fathom a 9 touchdown increase from a sophomore QB who won't be sneaking up on anyone this season. I know Tony Gonzalez is on board and Roddy White is an emerging star at wideout, but this coaching staff won't be suddenly forgetting the 17 times they watched the human bowling ball, Michael Turner, cross the goal line last year. Throw in a schedule that features 2 divisions with solid defenses (AFC East, NFC East) plus the Panthers twice, and I'm not sold.. yet.
The Dawg says: #12 - 3650 Yds/20 TD's. Still a fantasy starter, but not quite top-10.

Donovan McNabb, PHI - #10 - Projected 3,825 Yds/21 TD's (too low)
-He posted nearly 3,916 yards and 23 scores in 2008, while sitting out the Ravens contest (coach's decision). During this offseason he delivered ultimatum's about improving the team, and boy did management oblige. He got upgrades at both Tackle spots (Jason Peters, Stacy Andrews), along with a great draft that added WR Jeremy Maclin, Brian Westbrook-clone LeSean McCoy at RB, and a talented young receiving TE in Cornelius Ingram. Add that to 2nd-year sensation DeSean Jackson, Kevin Curtis, and popular sleeper TE Brent Celek, and suddenly McNabb appears to have the deepest supporting cast of his career. It's a typically rugged Eagles schedule, but he'll draw the pass defenses of the 49ers and Broncos during the fantasy playoffs. Yummy.
The Dawg says: #6 - 4,075 Yds/26 TD's. He could realistically approach 30 combined TD's and is being consistently underdrafted this year. I won't be doing so.

Bravo!

I was just reading Sports Illustrated's Fantasy Football 2009 edition this morning wondering to myself "Doesn't anybody edit this before it goes to print?"

I'm totally on the Atlanta/Ryan bandwagon but can't argue with you that 20 TD's is realistically the best he can do this year based on his schedule and the beloved Turner factor. White, Jenkins and Douglas will have fun playing monkey in the middle but won't detract from the running game enough to raise this sophomore's ceiling. Good Call!

McNabb: Nuff said already.

Nice work :) will there be more of these tasty treats?

I have a vested interest in watching Douglas fail to perform in '09...

Ironically enough, I think Jenkins will be the one who sees his production slip back to his career averages with the Gonzo addition. That was a factor for the modest uptick in yardage for Ryan.

I think they got the projection for Matt Ryan pretty close, and wouldn't be surprised if the numbers were higher. I am one of those guys that pays very close attention to the fact that a player like this caught DC's by surprise, but I don't think that plays into the equation with Ryan. This guy simply looked like the next coming of a great quarterback to me. If anything, I think teams will be loading up to stop that "bowling ball" more, and opening up things more for Ryan, especially with the addition of Tony G.

As for McNabb, hard to say. He has never had a 4000 yard season, including his biggest year with Terrell Owens. the stats seem to be pretty much where I would put him, providing he plays 16 games. McNabb rarely plays 16 games.

Don't talk smack about my boy Harry Douglas.

Amen! Douglas is gonna prove every doubting Tom, Dick and Wes wrong this season! If I'm wrong.... well we'll just see if I'm wrong first. I'm betting that I won't be :)

I'm totally on the Harry Douglas bandwagon (don't you dare do what I think you'll do with that sentence...). I think Chris and I have spoken about that in previous threads.

I too think that Matt could reach these numbers this year, but I'm totally with you McNabb. Too low, IMO.

Good post Wes.

I hope you all are right on Harry.....I'd love to watch him blow up on my roster after someone here gave up on him ;)

I agree with you on Ryan, just too much optimism on him going into the year. Dawg's projections are much more realistic IMO.
