Luke McCown: The QB job is mine

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a plethora of quarterbacks under contract, but Luke McCown believes he's got the coolest hand of them all.

And despite the presence of recently signed, proven veteran Byron Leftwich, McCown -- who signed a new deal himself in February -- declared emphatically Tuesday that the starting job is his to lose.

"Absolutely," McCown said, according to the St. Petersburg Times. "This has been a long time coming for me and I'm not letting anybody take it from me. And it's the first legitimate opportunity. Say what you want about getting three starts at the end of a season [two, in 2007].

Wonder what the rest of the 7 QBs think about this.

Hmmmm...big stretch here....

For choices at Qb you have McCown, Leftwich, Freeman and Josh Johnson....rumor has Griese being released this week.....

Of all those his ONLY competition will be Leftwich...who I happen to think would be the best shot. But McCown at least knows the offense.......

Really? Your talking about an NFL Team. Chaos and disorder are the rule of law.

I think Phic is right. The rumor is that Brian's out of here in a day or so. I think that not only are we looking for someone to lead the team now, but to also teach and mentor Freeman. I see Leftwitch winning that bout.

I gotta like the kids moxy. He knows he is going to be scrutinized and doubted so he may as well come out and play the role of being the one to beat. Sort of a self fulfilling prophesy or believe and and achieve it approach.

I am not convinced Lefty is the best for taking the field but may be the best for grooming Freeman (and Johnson). A year from now I can see McCow gone but could see him being the stop gap starter until Lefty preps the future - Freeman starting and Johnson as the primary back up.

My drill instructor in the Marine Corps told us that no matter where we went in the future, that we had to walk in as if we owned the place.

That mentality has got my ass kicked a few times, and gotten me fired once, but for the most part it has been a good philosophy to live by.

I tried that once during a tour of the White House.

Hilarity and many black GMC Suburbans ensued..

McCown has never impressed me.....I don't see him as anything for than a run of the mill back-up. This is Lefty's job to lose and Freeman will be groomed as the obvious QB of the future which will be a fun trainwreck to watch in and of itself....If Josh Johnson can have a nice came McCown may not only not get the starting job, he may not get a roster spot.....

I have never been overly impressed with McCown but at this point I can see him ahead of what Lefty has left to give.

Johnson was a nice project QB - will he fall out of favor under the new regime? Has he developed enough to still be considered a viable option?
