What does signing Chad Simpson mean for the Redskins?

I think the Redskins signed
Chad Simpson because he’s more versatile than
Ryan Torain, a promising young running back who first played for Head Coach Mike Shanahan back in Denver in 2008. Torain probably played well enough in the preseason to make the team, but the Redskins kept
Larry Johnson instead, but after cutting Johnson today, a space on the roster and at running back was open again. Simpson can play running back and return kickoffs and he has played on plenty of coverage units. Remember, Simpson was just cut by the Bills on September 4 so he wasn’t available to the Redskins when they made a roster decision on Torain.
I do think this makes
Devin Thomas vulnerable. Simpson averaged almost 24 yards per return on kicks last year [898 yards on 38 returns, 23.6 yards per attempt] and he did return one for a touchdown. Those are not amazing numbers, but they indicate he’s definitely good enough to handle the job. Undrafted rookie free agent
Keiland Williams, who replaces Johnson as top backup to starter
Clinton Portis, can also return kicks. [Williams was in on only 2 plays from scrimmage in week 1, but got 15 plays in week 2.] I think it would be a good idea for Devin Thomas to show something in practice pronto and give the Redskins a reason to keep him on the roster. If the only thing Thomas can do is return kicks and the Redskins decide Simpson and/or Keiland Williams can do that well enough to take his place, Thomas will have no place on this roster and he’ll follow LJ on to the unemployment line.
Shanny actually brought in LJ so he presumably felt some loyalty to him. He owes nothing to Devin Thomas.
