What does signing Chad Simpson mean for the Redskins?

I think the Redskins signed Chad Simpson because he’s more versatile than Ryan Torain, a promising young running back who first played for Head Coach Mike Shanahan back in Denver in 2008. Torain probably played well enough in the preseason to make the team, but the Redskins kept Larry Johnson instead, but after cutting Johnson today, a space on the roster and at running back was open again. Simpson can play running back and return kickoffs and he has played on plenty of coverage units. Remember, Simpson was just cut by the Bills on September 4 so he wasn’t available to the Redskins when they made a roster decision on Torain.
I do think this makes Devin Thomas vulnerable. Simpson averaged almost 24 yards per return on kicks last year [898 yards on 38 returns, 23.6 yards per attempt] and he did return one for a touchdown. Those are not amazing numbers, but they indicate he’s definitely good enough to handle the job. Undrafted rookie free agent Keiland Williams, who replaces Johnson as top backup to starter Clinton Portis, can also return kicks. [Williams was in on only 2 plays from scrimmage in week 1, but got 15 plays in week 2.] I think it would be a good idea for Devin Thomas to show something in practice pronto and give the Redskins a reason to keep him on the roster. If the only thing Thomas can do is return kicks and the Redskins decide Simpson and/or Keiland Williams can do that well enough to take his place, Thomas will have no place on this roster and he’ll follow LJ on to the unemployment line.
Shanny actually brought in LJ so he presumably felt some loyalty to him. He owes nothing to Devin Thomas.

Williams becomes a popular name on the wire

Finding a running back on the waiver wire at this point of the season is like trying to find a vegan in Nebraska. There is typically less desperation at closing time of your average tavern.
When guys like Keiland Williams become the hot name on the waiver wire, that is rather telling.
But Williams is fantasy-relevant following the Redskins’ release of RB Larry Johnson. Williams becomes the team’s No. 2 running back, which might not be a bad option considering that he is backing up Clinton Portis, who has had his fair share of health problems in recent weeks.
Grabbing Williams will not produce immediate dividends unless Portis is more banged up than we thought. But Williams is definitely worth adding to your team this week if you are in deeper leagues. The only warning here is that Jason La Canfora believes that Johnson was cut so the Redskins could add a special-teams player. Meaning Johnson could be added later in the season. So there is some risk.

Redskins released Larry Johnson.
Johnson was averaging a scant 0.4 yards on five early-season carries, including one ten-yard loss that apparently landed him permanently in Mike Shanahan's doghouse. Keiland Williams, a fine waiver wire addition, will take over as Clinton Portis' backup. Johnson clearly has little left in the tank, so he's unlikely to be more than injury insurance for another team. He can safely be dropped in all fantasy leagues.
