Lions RB Kevin Smith and TE Brandon Pettigrew Sounding A Little PUPery

Both players suffered late season torn ACLs and their recovery timetable seems to be inbetween training camp and season starting. So don't be surprised if either spend some time on the PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list. PUP sounds worse than it is and right now both players are limited to participating in individual drills. There have been no setbacks and they should be close to ready at the start of the season. Sometimes getting put on the PUP list is more about keeping a couple of extra roster spots open during camp and roster cutdowns than it is a negative reflection on the players recovery status. You need to keep an eye on this but not panic. Thankfully, you have a place like Sports Outlaw to go to and keep up on these things.

Beat writer Tom Kowalski says the Lions will likely put Kevin Smith (ACL surgery) on the Physically Unable to Perform list to start training camp.

(cbs.com)Lions coach Jim Schwartz said on a radio show in Detroit on Friday that RB Kevin Smith is doing well in his recovery from the major knee surgery he suffered last December, reports mlive.com. "He's doing fantastic," Schwartz said. "He's such a hard-working guy. We didn't expect anything different from him. But he's also healed pretty quick, and he's chomping at the bit. If we were to play a game, he's not ready. But he's making progress, he's running around, he's taking some individual drills. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see him ready at the start of training camp." Recently, mlive.com reported that Smith is a candidate for the PUP list to start training camp, so Schwartz could be providing some good news for Smith, who will enter the season competing with rookie Jahvid Best for playing time.

(TheHuddle) Detroit Lions RB Kevin Smith (knee) took part in some team drills during morning practice Wednesday, June 23, and took some handoffs as well as caught some passes during the drills, reports Tim Twentyman, of The Detroit News. He said he feels good but wants to take his time coming back.
Analysis: Smith taking part in team drills is a good sign for the Lions who are hoping for a full recovery for their starting tailback. Smith should see plenty of carries in the offense this year as long as there are no setbacks for him along the way. Fantasy owners should temper their expectations of Smith early in the season.
