Skip Wood, of USA Today, reports Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said the Lions are going to have a competitive battle at quarterback between Daunte Culpepper and rookie Matthew Stafford. He believes Culpepper has put himself in a really good position because of his weight loss and offseason program. Culpepper said his focus right now is to be better than he's ever been.

We have heard of the brewing Battle to be starter. Ot's almost put up or shut up time. It will be interesting to see how long this will take. The starter will need all the reps he can get going into the season. While I almost could believe that Megatron could score a TD without a QB, it's obviously not true.

Could be interesting with either one starting. Let culpepper start and let Stafford learn the game. Stafford is the Lions QB of the future. No reason to rush him in there with a chance to him getting hurt. Only bring him in as a starter if Culpepper totally flops.

A lot of people seem to think Stafford should start but that's just plain nuts. Culpepper should do just fine given his off-season and I would feel better with his experience behind center, at least until the o-line gels.

I know, I know, Stafford put up decent numbers behind a weak o-line at Georgia but this is the pros and Georgia didn't have to worry about protecting a financial investment.
