Lions negotiating with 3 players for #1 pick

Lions talking with 3 players

Detroit Lions have entered into preliminary negotiations with the representatives for Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford, Baylor offensive tackle Jason Smith and Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry for the right to be the first player selected in the 2009 NFL Draft on April 25.

Most league insiders think Stafford remains the prohibitive favorite to be the top pick. Schwartz is well-versed in the risks of drafting quarterbacks so high. He came to the Lions from the Titans, who had very mixed success with a pair of No. 3 overall picks in Steve McNair and Vince Young.

According to sources within the organization, left tackle Jeff Backus has expressed some willingness to switch positions, which would make it easier for Detroit to go with Smith first overall.
Smith, a former tight end, has rare athleticism, but is viewed by some as a bit of a projection to the NFL due to the fact that he primarily played out of the two-point stance at Baylor. While he plays with the physicality and nastiness NFL scouts love, Smith isn't as experienced in blocking from the traditional three-point stance as some of the other highly touted tackles in this draft class.
Curry is characterized by many as the draft's safest player, and is NFLDraftScout.com's top-ranked prospect. To be the top pick, however, Curry would be fighting history. Since 2001, A.J. Hawk, selected fifth overall by the Packers in 2006, is the only linebacker to have been drafted among the first eight picks.
The last linebacker selected with the first pick overall occurred over twenty years ago, when the Atlanta Falcons selected Aundray Bruce to begin the 1988 draft.

Surprised they failed to mention there that Stafford and Jason Smith share the same agent, which makes the negotiations for the #1 overall pick somewhat interesting.

It was mentioned in the linked article. I think they said different agents from the same company though

I really wish the salary sytem was different. In reality Detroit NEEDS to either take Smith or Curry then grab Bradford, Tebow, or McCoy next year. They're not realistically going to finish better than 4-12 IMO which will put their draft position next year in the top-5.
All 3 of those guys, plus maybe even Jevan Snead from Ole Miss, are better longterm prospects than Stafford or Sanchez.
Get Smith now and maybe Oher later, let Culpepper lead you to a slight increase in wins, and be in position to draft your future leader in 2010 when you have much better choices next year.

Stafford and J. Smith's agents are Tom Condon and Ben Dogra. Condon and Dogra are primary partners who represent along with Jim Steiner and Ken Kramer the football branch of CAA (Creative Artists Agency) a renowned entertainment agency. The 4 of them represent 130 NFL players. Condon and Dogra had Jake Long, Matt Ryan, and Vernon Gholston last year, totalling 6 first round picks in all. Most agents are lucky to have one. Condon in his own right is well known as a QB agent, with the Manning brothers, Pennington, Leinart, Brady Quinn, as well as Tomlinson among some of his better known clients.

They both do. Condon and Dogra can both get mentioned, because they work as partners. Condon is the higher profile of the two, and usually gets the headlines.

The real advantage, as evidenced by Brady Quinn having his own national advertising campaign, without even being a starter in the NFL, is their association with CAA.

Is Curry included just to offset the mutual representation of their first 2 priorities or would they seriously consider selecting him #1?

How big an advantage is having the same reps? If the concern was with the representation giving an advantage to Stafford/Smith I would think Monroe would have been added to the mix.

I would love to see a scenario where these unproven players can be worked using this approach. You get three of them talking, then they face being either #1, but not get all the money that they clearly do not yet deserve anyway, or perhaps falling to a #2, #3, or even #4 spot and lose even more...

Fantastic....focking love it....

Just viewed a mock draft over at Sporting News and if players fell to the areas predicted there - would it be such a bad idea for Detroit to go ALL D this year? The O was anything but impressive but no where near as bad as the D. Is there any chance the later picks fall as far as SN's has them?

1. Curry. Coach has already commented this is a glaring hole in the D

20. Jerry. He and Grady Jax should patch up the interior line rather nicely

33. Delmas. Safety seems like the biggest hole after the 1st 2 picks

65. Peques. Safety position becomes inexperienced but definitely upgraded

87. Johnson, R. I know 3 straight safeties is unlikely but talk about potentially turning a handicap into a strength

174. Egboh. Will compete for a starting position at DE (could he slip into the 6th?)

192. Shaughnessy. If not competing for a starting position definitely brings up the bench strength at DE (surprised he was still on the board)

255. BAP regardless of position

I have talked to a number of Lions fans and they all say the same thing. If Detroit takes Stafford, they are boycotting the team.

Smith or Curry make too much sense. The addition of Curry would give Detroit arguably the best young trio of LBs in the NFC with Julian Peterson, Ernie Sims, and Curry. They could address LT at #20 and DT at #33, with three more picks to address continuous needs. ESPN has even come out and said that Culpepper has surprised alot of people at camp, coming in 30 pounds lighter and really leading the team.

Smith would not necessarily be a lock for All Pro in his first year, but his athleticism and the drafting of Cherilus would let the Lions have a fluid line to make sure Smith can handle LT. Backus would move back inside to G, Raiola stays at C, and RG is the only true need. The Lions signed Dylan Gandy at OG, but I dont think he's the full term stop gap at RG they expect. I seem them taking OG in round three.

1. Curry. For the same reason I stated, give yourself the best LB corps in the NFC

20. Britton or Oher. The addition of LT would is too big a hole to miss. OT has to be a first round selection.

33. Ron Brace. DT to pair and eventually replace Grady Jackson gives the Lions a formidable front and paired with the LBs, would be a huge upgrade.

65. Paul Kruger. A blue collar DE that may not last until round three, but if he does, he's a steal and instantly gives the DEs there some pressure for playing time.

87. David Bruton. FS from Notre Dame that is highly productive, extremely intelligent, runs a 4.46 40 at 6-4 219 pds. He's exactly the type of player Detroit would want.

174. CB...Mickens or Allen here. Definitely need to shore up the secondary

192. BPA

255. BPA
