Lions looking to upgrade O line this offseason

Tim Twentyman, of The Detroit News, reports Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said the team will address their needs at offensive guard this offseason, either through free agency or the 2010 NFL Draft. A less likely option is for the team to select a highly rated offensive tackle in the draft and move OT Jeff Backus from left tackle to guard.

I'd like them to play the FA market or take a OG later in the draft. Either way, it's good that they realize the o-line needs much help.

Backus isn't really an offensive tackle, so I don't know why it'd by less likely. The Lions would benefit far more by moving Backus inside and drafting a gifted rookie than the other way. The Bills tried the other way and we saw how that worked.

Backus is still their best option at that position so I agree it is less likely since I would prefer the #2 pick going for the DL that falls to them and am not confident the quality of OT's better than Backus (yes I'm saying it) will be available at top of the 2nd.

If I were the Lions, I'd be more concerned with keeping Stafford alive. DL is the deepest position in this draft, so there's absolutely no reason to burn the #2 pick on Suh when there are higher priorities.

FAs: Bobbie Williams, Cincinnati Bengals; Jared Gaither, Baltimore Ravens (if avail.); Jermon Bushrod, New Orleans Saints (if avail.)

Draft (3rd round): Kyle Calloway, Iowa; Rodger Saffold, Indiana; Mike Johnson, Alabama; Vladimir Ducasse, UMass

I'd like to see them take McCoy/ Suh with the first, then DE with the second, then O-line/ DB with the 3rd.

So what you're saying is you don't want them to draft a franchise left tackle. The Lions should be following the model of every successful franchise rebuild; which dictates a franchise QB and a franchise LT must be taken with the greatest possible haste, that any other needs are secondary and the people to fill them can be found with good scouting, and that ultimate success comes from churning the bottom of the roster with free agents.

I'm just saying that this year they need to upgrade the defensive line. If they go tackle with the second pick, then DE with the third, that's fine. But with the first pick, I don't see how they could pass on Suh or McCoy.

If I were Detroit, here is what I would do.

I would take McCoy or Suh in first round.
Then go OT 2nd.

I would then over pay and get Vanden Bosch for DE

You fix most issues that way

Now all we have to do is have you impersonate the Lions GM for the off season. :)

.

Ducasse will probably be gone by the 3rd, and I believe I recall seeing that Tra Thomas was released by Jax several weeks back. He was a guy I was hoping Pittsburgh could try and pick up on the cheap.

I agree with Stormy on making D a priority. They have a chance of getting a special player at the DT position with that 1st pick - draft the best that early. Whether DE or DB (depending on best available) would be fine.

Not saying the OL doesn't need the attention but the D is still the sore spot on this team.
