News: The Jets officially announced that they will release veteran RB Thomas Jones before the start of the new NFL season on March 5, ending his three-year tenure with the club. "When I got here Thomas immediately became one of my guys," coach Rex Ryan said in a statement. "He had one of his best years last season -- might have been his best. I have a tremendous amount of respect for him as a player and a person. As I said the other day, this is one of the tough decisions we had to make for our organization."
Analysis: The veteran posted career-bests across the board with 1,402 rushing yards on 331 carries and 14 touchdowns, adding another 58 yards on 10 catches. But Jones has also hit some red flag landmarks defined from our research on when a running back begins to deteriorate: He has nearly 2,300 career carries and eight full seasons of work under his belt. The only positive is that Jones has never suffered a major leg, ankle, foot or knee injury (he did ding his knee in the '09 postseason, which limited him). With several teams looking for running back help for this season, expect Jones to land on his feet and at least split carries.
There's going to be a glut of RB's this year available in Free Agency, gonna be very interesting how it all shakes out.
