Jamaal Charles healing nicely, can he lead you to the promised land?

rotoworld,

Jamaal Charles (shoulder surgery) promises to be at full speed by the start of Chiefs training camp.

"The shoulder’s holding up fine," he said. "They just want to keep me right until we really get started. They don’t want me to trip and fall on it." Charles missed OTAs, allowing Thomas Jones to take all the first-team reps. We've got a feeling that new OC Charlie Weis is going to fall in love with Charles, though. Weis is passionate for versatile, homerun-hitting tailbacks.

He's a Chief. Temper your expectations.

Split carries with Jones and a "come from behind" offense leave little for Charles except short passes.

Holmes and Johnson were a couple of pretty good Chiefs for fantasy owners Tekie. I think you should move CJ the holdout and seek Charles.

Except that Jones had a great year last year, especially after Leon went down with his injury. I doubt KC would have brought him over just to serve as a locker room role model. I don't see TJ winning all the work, but I think he's get just enough touches really annoy JC owners.

(nfl.com)Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles was not with the team Wednesday as they took the day off from their OTA sessions to visit Whiteman Air Force Base, an hour east of Kansas City. "He's continuing to work out and get stronger," said coach Todd Haley, referring to offseason surgery on Charles' right shoulder. "He's determined to have this behind him."

I am a bit on Rachelles' side here. The split of carries between TJ / JC will probably just be fantasy annoying. Both may fall into the category of being flex useful in flex leagues. Not really starter worthy except in larger leagues but as a flex option will be better than playing your 4th WR in the flex spot.

rotoworld,
Coach Todd Haley suggested that the Chiefs' addition of Thomas Jones was more about the NFL's general trend toward sharing the load as opposed to durability concerns for Jamaal Charles (shoulder surgery).

"In this day and age, it's a concern for everybody regardless of who it is because those guys take a severe beating," said Haley. "I wouldn't say it's about Jamaal so much as it's about the way of the league right now. You need two quality backs." As long as he's back to full health by training camp, Charles is in no danger of losing the feature back job.

cbssports.com,
The Kansas City Star reports that the Chiefs are expected to make RB Jamaal Charles "the centerpiece of the offense." Charles is going to share carries with Thomas Jones, who was brought in as a complementary option, but the paper reports Charles "must show signs that he can keep improving and that last year's statistics weren't a fluke." Last year, Charles had 190 carries for 1,120 yards (5.9 yards per carry) and seven touchdowns and 40 catches for 297 yards and one touchdown with three lost fumbles.

Analysis: If you project what Charles did in his final eight games for the entire season he would have had 320 carries for 1,936 yards and 14 touchdowns. But with Jones now in the mix, Charles won't get the chance to match those stats. Still, we like Charles as a No. 2 Fantasy RB. Even though Jones will likely get the short-yardage and goal-line carries, the Chiefs will be pass happy with Charlie Weis now the offensive coordinator. Charles should still be drafted as early as Round 3, and hopefully Jones won't ruin his value altogether. It's also a good sign that the Chiefs are planning to use Charles as the centerpiece of the offense.

I see this more as a CJ/LenDale White part duex. TJ will take the pounding running and short yardage and goal line, while Charles wil come in and electrify the offense and get big yards at a rip. In his rookie year both were very viable options, I don't see that different here.

The Chiefs also had the best O-line in the NFL back in those days...unfortunately those days are long past.

I like Charles but T. Jones is by far the most underrated RB in football. His presence really scares me in relation to Charles' production. Every year Jones is considered a has been and every year he outshines his detractors predictions.

rotoworld,
Jamaal Charles (shoulder) is taking part in full-contact drills as the Chiefs open training camp.

Charles' shoulder was tested right away when a wave of defenders lifted him off his feet and drove him into the ground. The play led to a skirmish when the rest of the offense took exception to the hit. The Chiefs obviously have no reservations about Charles' surgically repaired shoulder. Consider him healthy and ready to go for the regular season.

cbssports.com,
Despite Jamaal Charles' amazing 2009 campaign, the Chiefs have listed him as a backup on their current depth chart according to the Kansas City Star. Thomas Jones, who was signed by the team this offseason, worked with the first-team offense during their early training camp practices. The paper surmises that this is a "mind game" played by head coach Todd Haley to motivate Charles to work hard this summer after missing offseason workouts recovering from shoulder surgery. "That's coaching," Haley said. "I'm not real interested in any of these guys being real comfortable."

Analysis: We suspect that Charles will eventually regain the first-team reps in Kansas City, but it's obvious that Jones is there to lighten the rushing workload. Still, Jones has met several benchmarks we look for in a running back's career that signal when a player starts to slow down, and we wouldn't be surprised to see him struggle this season. That should open the door for Charles to put up more solid stats. We love him as a No. 2 Fantasy RB and would recommend taking him between Round 3 and early Round 4.
