Just announced on NFLN. Merriweather fined $50K for 2 hits. A letter is also forthcoming from the league

Sounds like referees are also being reminded that they have the right to eject a player. Sounds like they may even be gettin encouraged to eject.

"I'm the first one to say that not every penalty should be a fine. But there is a difference between whether it's a flagrant-ejection kind of a hit or whether it's a 15-yard penalty."
Andre Johnson, the Texans' All-Pro wide receiver, noted that some of the violence can't be removed from the sport.
"A lot of times, guys are just out there playing and they'll just go and get you," he said. "I don't really think they're thinking about the helmet-to-helmet contact.
They will be thinking about it now

"You'll probably see a lot of players more hesitant before they make their hits."

IDPs are sure going to be different this week. Anyone out there that you may not start now with that in mind

:headscratch:

Not too sure RC. Sounds like the league is intending to go very strict enforcement on existing rules that they feel should be sufficient.

Although I don't think the league wants to see any of those types of hits this week, I do feel they want to see a couple ejections and suspensions to drive the point home.

Sounds like those 3 players got a bit of a break based on past history of those rules not being enforced. Would be an interesting prop bet on how many ejections/suspensions will be issued on next weeks games

Sorry but I am with RC. I was watching SNF, and Rodney Harrison said something like, "Every year, I used to put 50k aside for when I get fined for doing these kind of hits. Because to me, 50k is nothing!"

I wish I could find a clip of it right now. Because even Dungy said that the coaches put pressure on the players to make sure to do whatever it takes to separate the ball from the player, and they dont care if somebody gets a fine.

And then this week, Jerome H said something like he gets jacked up if he knocks a player out, and that Cribbs was basically "asleep" on the play. He just hopes nobody gets injured in the end.

ummm, no, Sorry Jerome! Your an idiot! And you went Head Hunting!

These fines are a joke. But hopefully your right Arctic, if somebody does it next time, an ejection and suspension has to follow to drive the point home. I just think the NFL should have done it right here!

While I am in favor of suspensions, the fine on Merriweather is significant. They stated on ESPN if he was suspended a game instead, it would have only cost him around $32k. So $50 k on him is a significant number.

Harrison's $75k when he's made $20 mil over the last 3 years is simply a drop in the bucket.

Harrison acting on a script. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/10/20/james-harrison-contemplates-retirement/

"I'm going to sit down and have a serious conversation with my coach [Wednesday] and see if I can actually play by NFL rules and still be effective," Harrison told Tony Bruno of FOX Sports Radio. "If not, I may have to give up playing football. . . . I really truly hope it's something that can be done. But the way that things were being explained to me [Tuesday] and the reasoning for it, I don't feel I can continue to play and be effective and, like I say, not have to worry about injuring someone else or risking injury to myself."
